Which games was he watching?

I know nothing of baseball so this was very confusing. I thought that the radio guy said that they were tied 2-2 wins. Then I thought that he was watching game 6. But after 2-2 wouldn't be game 5? Who had won how many games going into game 6 and who won game 6?
TIA

nah, you must have misheard. he was watching game 6. going into game 6, the red sox were leading the mets 3 games to 2. The Mets won game 6 on the unbelievable Buckner error, and went on to win game 7 as well the following night (not included in the movie).

Then why did Robert Downey Jr. say "If they lost tonight, they'll lose tomorrow. It's all over." They didn't lose, they won. Was he just being pessimistic? He should have said "If they didn't lose tonight, they'll lose tomorrow." I was very confused by the all this, and thought that I had it figured out, and then RDJ made that statement and really screwed me up. I double checked it with the subs and the script at imsdb.com

Robert Downey Jr. was talking about the Red Sox when he said that. The Sox lost both Game 6 & 7.

Sox fans, knowing the team's history, knew that the team usually starts off strong but fizzles at the end. True to form, they had a strong start in the series with a 3-2 lead going into Game 6. But, failing to clinch the victory when they had the chance, they fizzled.

Even Game 7 mirrored that. The Sox started out strong with a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning but lost steam at the end & gave up 8 runs to lose the Series.

Must've really sucked to be a Sox fan that year :(

Thanks for all the help everyone I just keep getting more confused.

Haha, I can imagine if you're not a baseball fan it would be confusing, just like Rocky was confusing to me when I first saw it (didn't Rocky lose? then why is he so happy?!)

In this movie, at first Nicky imagines that the Red Sox won game 6, but in reality the first baseman dropped the ball and they lost. Does that help at all, or should I just shut up?

Thanks for your help, but it's been too long and I was so confused that I am beyond help. The only way that I could make sense would be to watch it again with someone that knows baseball and understand the movie.

Red Sox led 3-2 going into Game 6 and lost both 6 and 7.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.
