WHY!?

Why must they humiliate us Red Sox fans even more? We won it, leave us alone for cropies sake.

reply

Because us Mets fans need something to help us re-live our past glories. The way things look, it could be 86 years before the Mets ever win it again. This should just serve as a reminder for you Chowds for how sweet it really is to finally shake off that ridiculous "curse".

Enjoy.

Well, let's see- first you had an excellent movie called Frequency (see it if you haven't already) about the first Mets World Series, and now you'll have one about the 2nd time you guys won it. What's next- a movie about the year you guys lost it?

I understand that the movie they were filming during this year's Series (don't remember the title, but Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon are in it) had to be rewritten because we Sox fans finally have something to celebrate (ask me what I got for Christmas!) after all these years. If you saw the revised version of CURSE OF THE BAMBINO on HBO this month, you saw graves in New England decorated with Red Sox banners.

I've had a wonderful evening - but this wasn't it.

Actually, you should know that Keaton's character is a Red Sox fan in the film. It may be about the Mets' victory, but few films are as sympathetic to the plight of the sox fan as this one.

Ah, the subway series. The series that nobody west of the Hudson watched and everyone east of the East River ignored (except for those in Connecticut that think they're New Yorkers but every knows as frauds). That would make a fantastic movie.

What are you whining about? It's less than a year since Boston won it and there is ALREADY a movie made about it (as you mentioned). There is no more over-celebrated team (mostly for losing) in all of pro sports than the Red Sox. How come we don't hear the endless whining about the 'heartbreak' of White Sox fans?

But I agree that this is a pointless movie....I'd much rather watch the real game on ESPN classic and hear the great Vin Scully making his call:

"....a little roller up along first . . . behind the bag . . . it gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!"

reply

Pointless movie? The game is just the BACKDROP for a really well acted STORY..it not about the Red Sox...get a life

Typical Sox fan. You won in spectacular fashion...And you're STILL complaining!

Maybe it's karma. Bill Buckner was treated like dirt by Sox fans after the events of game 6. Very vindictive behaviour. That's just my opinion, though; I'm a Mets fan.

But grats on the win; anyone who humiliates the Yankees like the Sox did is ok by me:)

Justice, like lightning...

There were a few idiots who treated Buckner like dirt, well, worse than dirt. The press has had a field day with this ever since. Let's not forget that Buckner received a standing Ovation on opening day in '87. True fans know that There would be no Red Sox World Series without him. Stapleton should have been in the game at that point as was the norm that season. (Does ths name Schiraldi ring any bells??)

I've never heard of this movie. Came across it on this site by accident. It sounds really good but there still is pain. Eighty-six years of collapses and close-calls have taken their toll on us. I see reminders of the World Series victory and catch myself asking "It really did happen?". As a bit of a purist, I think I'll have to wait until the 'Sox win the Series after first winning their division to see this movie.

And there was that whole Game 7 that was played, too.

You Sox fans think you have it bad? The BoSox became my second favorite team in '75, and that's where they've remained in my personal pecking order. Ya know who's first? The Cubs. So I don't want to hear anyone complaining, got it?? lol

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

You're right, you guys won in '04, you shouldn't even care about this anymore, just let them have their fun and get a good laugh at it. Kind of like I did with the play "Damn Yankees."

Yes he was treated badly. I mean the guy had a great career and he is best remembered for letting a ball go through his legs. He even got death threats after the Series. You know, it could happen to anyone. A few years ago, he appeared on the short-lived sitcom Inside Schwartz. The main character is worried that he will become The Bill Buckner of Dating. Buckner shows up and says, "I had a baseball go through my legs 15 years ago. Let it go." lol

Boston fans should be able to enjoy these movies now that you've won the WS and got there in the best way possible - humiliating the Yankees!
Go Mets!

Whatever. It was just a game that happened 17-18 years ago that doesn't matter anymore. Let it go.

this is not about the mets/sox. keaton's character is a big sox fan, but baseball provides only a subtext for the film, which is something don delillo is known for.

The pressure on the Cubs is enormous now.

Bill Buckner got a bad rap. The game was already tied when the ball rolled through his legs (line drive? No. Slow roller), and Bob Stanley wasn't covering first, so even if he did field it cleanly, he wasn't going to beat Mookie Wilson to the bag. And the reason it was tied was because Calvin Shiraldi couldn't get the third out. First two were easy, then a couple of base hits, 2, count 'em 2 wild pitches tied it, and put the winning run on 2nd. The momentum had shifted completely, and as most baseball fans know, Red Sox fans especially, momentum will carry you or kill you. Even if they hold Knight at third on that play, the next guy drives him in, or at the very least, the Mets win it in the next inning. Calvin Shiraldi should be the one we Sox fans blame for that loss.
Rumor has it that Bob Stanley was invited to a grand opening of a sports bar in Boston the next spring to throw out a ceremonial first pitch, and a patron took him deep with a swizzle stick.
The loss of the '86 Series is a lot easier to take now that they won it all in 2004.

bad rap?

the ball was a weak ground ball

reply

the thing is, people often fail to remember the Wild Pitch Stanley threw that TIED THE GAME..chances are the Mets would have won regardless of the groundball since it had been tied.

The movie is not about the game, even with the title, it's about Michael Keaton's RELATION with the game.

reply

Anyway, where can I see the movie, or get a copy?

Sokay, people dont realize that it wasnt Buckners fault for losing that game.

reply

It wasn't ENTIRELY his fault, that is true. The old saying though is that you can't force the pitcher to get 4 outs in an inning. If Buckner makes that play, the Red Sox survive another inning. This is not to say that there wasn't plenty of blame to go around.
