Was this a goof or not?

When the husband kidnaps the first girl, the one who forgot her keys, she asks him for a cigarette and they walk back to his car together. He kidnaps her and only then blindfolds her. Back at the house, Karla takes off the blindfold & the girl looks at the husband. He then says they have to kill her because she can identify him. Ummmmm...didn't she see his face earlier when he spoke to herm then shoved her in the car??? Or was he playing mind games with Karla because he wanted to justify the murder?

reply

No he wouldnt have killed her before, because he didnt rape her yet, so he raped her then....had to "justify" if you will the murder

reply

i think he said that to karla so she would go along with killing her

reply

i'm fairly certain he'd already raped her - all through the night and morning. but i think it was because it was dark when he'd abducted her, she likely didn't get a good enough look at him to worry him.

reply

I think the husband was playing a lot of mind games with both Karla and the captive. I thought the same thing about how the victim had to get a good look at him before and during the initial abduction and, he did look surprised and disgusted when she opened her eyes and saw him back at the house. However, a complex deviant mind like Paul's might have just been playing this out for Karla's sake, meaning, he was planning on killing her all along and this gave his a more logical excuse to do so. He might have also been testing the waters to see if Karla had gained a "good stomach" for murder yet. Like is very common, Paul was advancing toward this desire and he possibly wanted to get Karla more "into" it. This was his way of introducing her to the concept rather than just coming out and saying, "Hey, lets kills this girl for the heck of it." Most likely, it was a combination of factors add

i think it was a goof when she was smoking american looking smokes in the beginning. they could have at least made the pack look flat and red or something instead of that marlboro yellow crap.

reply

why woulnd they look american and also dont cigerets look the same everyware

reply

That definitely wasn't a goof, anni_boo.

Not only can you get American cigarettes in Canada, but Paul Bernardo ran a cigarette smuggling ring, so she would, of course, have total access. Not to mention that they lived within half an hour of the border...

reply

Canada.

reply

yeah maybe he brought smokes in from across the border, but do you think she would still have cartons of it in the regional psychiatric centre?

i actually live in the city where she was staying. it's hard to find american cigarettes here. unless she had them imported special for her.

this is what canadian cigarettes look like.

they come in flat packs of 25 usually. 15 on one side and 10 on the other.

For an average person, quite likely.

Paul was a cigarette smuggler though.

reply

I want to start off by saying I am Canadian and live between 30-60mins away from where this all took place. I remember when this happened and I just finished reading a book about this. I haven't seen the movie mainly due to that fact even books about these crimes are hard to come by around here.
Anyway, to my point. This was not a goof. It was the same way in the book (written in '95) and it actually points out in the trial that more then likely Karla actually killed the girls. When the autopsy came back on the first girl abducted (Leslie) they discovered the only bruising was two small circles on her lower back. They concluded these marks would be consistent with Karla kneeling on her back when SHE strangled Leslie from behind with a cord.
Karla Homolka was just as sick if not sicker then Bernardo and should still be locked away rotting in jail.

reply

Actually it was Kristen that has the bruising on her lower back. I feel it's more than likely that Karla may have assisted in the murders, but Paul did the actual strangulation.

I've read three books on this case, and it still amazes me that these two people were so unfeeling for their victims.

reply

but Paul did the actual strangulation.

You don't know that for sure. Karla probably killed them when Paul was away getting food the first time for Karla, Leslie and him and the second time for Karla, Kristen and him. Animals. They are nothing but animals and should be behind bars having their food thrown to them.

Karla probably killed them
------

Probably? You have no idea either. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't, it's 50/50, there is no 'probably'.

You're making me--- you're making my stomach sick.

reply

You're right ~ I don't know for sure. The only 'evidence' that Paul did the killings is Karla's word. And you know how much THAT is worth! The only people that know the truth are Paul, Karla, Tammy, Leslie and Kristen.

what food? taxpayers shouldn't be paying their grocery bill. they should be behind bars begging for food as they starve to death.

reply

You're SOOOOO right only jail was way too good for her still! Good old fashion death penalty old school electric chair is what they BOTH deserved but Karla's sentence still sickens me who does all that and gets what 12 years was it? I was wondering since you're Canadian do they do the death penalty? I wasn't even sure if you do or not?

reply

Nope no death penalty here. Bernardo will never, ever get released. Last I heard, Karla has left the country with her new husband and child she had after she finished her joke of a sentence. I'm sorry but my feeling is if part of your condition of release is not to be near or have interaction with youth, they should have taken that baby from her the second it was born.

reply

Bernardo will never, ever get released?

Don't count on that, google "Bernardo parole". He's up for parole in April 2017. Although not likely, it could still happen.

And Karla lives in Chateauguay, Quebec.

reply

There are quite a few experts that now agree that Karla probably was the main killer as Paul has stated since his conviction. Paul was a brutal rapist and Karla was the one who liked to kill them after her husband had desired them...just as he had her sister Tammy. They BOTH kidnapped, tortured, and abused these girls too. One cannot be innocent of any of it...they fed off each other.

Karla (now Leanne Teale) is one sick person. It is really sad and scary that she's out there somewhere.

they were american spirit, lights, probably the worst cigarette on the face of the earth. they don't sell american cigarette brands in canada? they sell canadian cigarettes here...

reply

I have to agree that in the context (not real life) of this movie, Paul was playing mind games with Karla.

Bernardo kidnapped Leslie Mahaffy in the middle of the night, where there was little light for her to identify him.
