Is it funny?

Well I'm thinking about getting this for PSP when it comes out and I just want to know if it's funny. I'm a big Dave Chappelle fan and I really liked Killin' Them Softly. How does this compare to it?

reply

Its just as funny. Its different from killing me softly but you can tell he's matured. its the same offbeat topics, but he tells more stories that tie together, I felt like KTS was more of a random scattered approach. you can tell his show (god bless it) has influenced his storytelling. I give it a A-.

It's not as funny as Killin' Them Softly, but it was very funny! He just has this strange way of looking at life that is off-the-wall, very funny, and very TRUE! How often do you get that from a comedian? My wife hasn't seen this one, so I am renting it tomorrow. She loved Killin' Them Softly, I think she'll loves this one, too!

reply

so much funnier then killin em softly its the funniest thing i ever watched

I rented this standup and I must say, it was so dissapointing. His older standup was so fresh and crazy funny, but I was feeling embarrassed for him watching this.
I really like Dave, but now I can see why he had his self-doubt exile. Maybe he's out of quality material for awhile and he knows it.

reply

who could be self-dpubting with balls that smooth?

reply

His "exile" wasn't even because of self-doubt. It was because he wanted to connect with his religion and he felt that his commedy violated his religion.

r u retarted? this is 100000000000 times better then KTS. how dare u say some *beep* like ur embarresed 4 him? im emmbaresed 4 u. this is one of the funniest stand-ups ive ever seen.

reply

i like it more, but im a huge chappelle fan. i like all his stuff. i thought this one was hilarious.

reply

I think it was about the same...or maybe a little less funnier than Killin' Them Softly. But it's not so much less that you can tell.

I like the Dixie Chicks/Ja Rule sketch...and the Native American sketch, and some others.

Tnis is the funniest stand up i have ever seen. I watched 3 times when i rented it so i decided to go out and buy it. It is funnier than killin' em softly but killin em softly was great as well. Dave chappelle is a genius and is naturally funny. It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud for standups but dave really did this. Oh yea and i watch a lot of stand up, and this is my favorite.

I thought it was mad funnier that 'Killin'

It's really good, it was so good I actually bought the dvd, still the only dvd i have ever bought in my life

First, for "Is it funny?" Of course it is. And what kind of a 'big dave chapelle fan' hasn't already seen this? Purple Drink---that's all I have to say.
Second, this standup, which I rented, and then decided not to take back, was Dave at his best. He hasn't changed anything, or ran out of material, he has just grown older, and has a slightly different (yet wiser) view of the world and the people in it. I saw him on his recent tour, and no only could I tell all of this in the act, but in his encore, he sat down and told us "why" he left everything and went to Africa, and in so many words, it was because he is older, wiser, and smarter, but refuses to let go of who he is. The jokes from this show are as simple and as brilliant as any jokes from any other show he has ever done. Dave Chapelle, with such a genius perspective, paired with his specifically cultured upbringing, has to be one of the most blessed individuals and entertainers that has ever grabbed a microphone.

Definitely agree with you there.

I do think that Killin' Them Softly is funnier than this one though...

When I first saw this show, I too thought that this show was merely 'really funny' and viewed it in similar terms to Killing Them Softly. However, on further viewings I have come to appreciate this show as an great example of pure stand-up, with Chappelle going much further than trying to merely get laughs.
Obviously, routines such as that about the Homeless man Jacking it on the bus are hardly going to overthrow governments, but when he moves into the territories of 'How old is 15?' and discusses certain media's reaction to 9/11, Chappelle proves himself (in my opinion, at least) to be a comedian who actually thinks about what he's trying to do and has a point to make.
That said, I'm a sucker for the Bill Hicks-style heart and soul brand of comedy, and with this show Chappelle demostrates a characteristic that's tragically not seen enough in modern stand-up: humanity.
Obviously, this is just one (particularly white) guy's opinion, be sure to lambast me if you disagree. I can take it...I think...
