The ending?

Ok, the movie starts with him on deathbed, but if I remember correctly, the movie never "returns" to that moment. Instead, it ends with her walking through the field. Can someone remind me what happened before this last scene? I felt the ending was little rushed, I didn't quite understand it.

He collapsed after the performance of the Grosse Fuge and you see him in bed dictating to Anna as he is too weak to write the notes down himself. He never recovers from this illness and you're right it doesn't return to the actual deathbed scene but we are meant to understand he has died. Anna has followed his advice and moved to the country and he has left her the plaque with the verse that was hanging on the wall in his apartment. So sad!

Ok, thank you. I still think the ending could've been better.
