Ledger's acting

I just wanna say that I enjoyed the film, but found it a bit too depressing and thought about selling the DVD. Then I remembered a scene where Ledger cries like a child, and also many scenes where he expresses sadness in truly poignant way. I guess I'm gonna keep my DVD after all, and maybe save it for a sunny day. Exceptional performance by Ledger, way better IMO than in The Dark Knight.

I think Ledger was extraordinary in both "The Dark Knight" and in "Candy". However, TDK is not my type of entertainment, way too violent, way too comic bookish. In "Candy" Heath had an opportunity to bring to life a real man and is so subtle yet so strong in his performance. It is truly outstanding.

I think it's a pity that many of his fans who tout TDK perhaps miss out on this stunningly simple performance. This was also his final performance using his native accent.

Ledger is the king of subtlety. I dont really know what else to say. His acting was absolutely perfect in Candy. I'm surprised he didn't get an Oscar nom

I'm not surprised either, it was just a figure of speech. I meant to say that he deserved an Oscar nom, but I can see why he didn't get it. I thought his performance was even better the 2nd time I saw Candy. Like a great film, it grew on me

Heath's performance does grow on u. The second time I got it. The 3rd time I loved it. And it will stand as one of his greatest performances ever. Its a shame we won't be able to see more. That's why this movie is kind of a hidden gem.

As far as an Oscar nomination goes. He deserved one and smaller actors in smaller films have been nominated before.

Life is Beautiful was a small Italian film and Robert Benigni walked away with Best Actor of 1998.

In1995 Massimo Trosi was nominated Best Actor for Ill Postino (The Postman)

Lesser known actors have been nominated for lesser known films. Sometimes its not the size of the film but the size of the Oscar campaign. That's how Miramax got on the map. There was no Oscar promotion at all for Candy. It barely even made The Hollywood Reporter.

"This was also his final performance using his native accent." <-- I don't think this really means much...he and Geoffrey Rush (who is another Australian born actor) were the least sounding native Australians in the movie. I think they both had been doing too many movies in America and other countries really. I think it is great that one of Heath's last films was an Aussie film though.

Talk about being picky! I've heard people getting really obsessive about accents, but to complain about Heath when he was using his native dialect is just too much for me.

I wasn't being picky just that his and Geoffrey Rush's accents sound more like generic "british" accents compared to their fellow costars. So "native australian accent" doesn't really apply in my opinion but just the fact that he did another Aussie film I think is great. I think it is disappointing when actors lose their native accents in favour of more acceptable ones. Like Julian McMahon, Portia de Rossi, and many many others. I just found a clip of Julian McMahon talking about having to lose his to get parts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O-PCQ96GMY. Going back to Heath Ledger though...I think Heath's accent just became less pronounced over time because of how successful he got and that he was portraying non Australian characters. I think he acted very well in this and it is great that this is one of the films we get to remember him by.

Yes, this was, in my opinion, one of his greatest performances, the Joker be damned.

Are you Australian? If not, I think you lose any credibility.

BTW, most actors have a regional accent that they have to overcome in order to branch out in the field. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon had a Boston accent, for instance. But it doesn't mean that they have truly lost it, just learned another way to speak in additional to their first dialect. One of the most prominent methods for an actor to retain their native speech is by talking to their family. I know that's how my family members do it.

His best overall is Brokeback IMO, but this is a close second and then Dark knight.

Im Australian and I never for a moment thought Heath was speaking with anything other than an Australian accent. Rush on the other hand has always had a very proper manner of speaking which can sound British at times but even so his accent is still definitely Australian.

Yes, Ledger was very fine in this movie. But Abbe Cornish as Candy, was even better. I thought her performance was incredible. And a film like "Candy" shouldn't be compared to a film like "Dark Knight," as they are of entirely different genres, and they appeal to very different tastes.
