Don't listen to these bad reviews!

This movie really challenged me to think about how I view male victims of sexual abuse.
Sure it's not usually three hooded women in black masks and chains and all that... but it apparently happens more than you'd think.

As for the actual film quality.. I found it absorbing and the main character's performance was incredibly vulnerable and honest.

I've read some women had a hard time either sympathizing or identifying with the victim. I didn't have a problem there. I felt just as worried for him as I ever have any female victim in movies, perhaps even more so because he had no one to turn to for help.

I was disappointed that we never find out who did it, but I disagree with some on these forums who say knowing their motive is necessary. I think we can infer different motives, and the ending does alright without it.

Everytime I read a story about how ordinary people have difficulty sympathizing with someone who is a victim of a terrible deed for reasons that have nothing to do with it not happening, I go crazy. It makes me ask how thin the line between good and evil really is in the world, and what would happen if ordinary people were allowed to do what they want with little restrictions.

And by the way, I'd be incredibly surprised if you actually said you HAD a problem with identifying with a victim of a situation simply because in a slightly unusual turn of events he is a man. And the fact that he has no one to turn for help really makes me question the world and how good overall it is.

Also, I am not advocating anything like George Orwell's 1984, but sometimes I wonder not only if ordinary people can be more civilized but what must be done to those who are not?

The greatest trick the Devil has ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist!
