Preperation Shootout

I was just curious if anyone got through the shootout portion of the training mission by actually kill people with the assault rifle. I get to one area with a bunch of barricades and a machine gunner who doesn't go down. Can you beat him or is he there to kill you so you can't complete the training mission if you kill people.
