where and when can I see this film?

I really want to view Mr. Blanks rock and roll masterwork...
Does anyone know when and where it will play soon?

A rarely seen documentary by Les Blank - on a major rock star of the 70s, described by the Washington Post “The best film ever made on rock.” (1974/90 mins./USA) Q&A with Les Blank. No recording devices permitted. Limited Seating

It's showing this coming Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley CA. See their website for details.

Les showed it in the Pixar auditorium in Emeryville, CA shortly before his death. The original legal agreement with Leon Russell stipulates that it could only be shown if Les Blank was there in person, and since Les is now confined to a cemetery plot in El Cerrito CA, that requirement can never again be met. I have heard that negotiations are pending regarding an eventual limited release, but meanwhile nobody seems to know why Leon Russell doesn't want the movie to be widely seen. There is one sequence in which a roadie, extremely high on something, maybe PCP, is literally bouncing off the walls in a small room, so perhaps Leon simply doesn't want that shown as it reflects badly on his entourage during those heady times.

This information was recently posted at the criterion collection forum.

Criterion release confirmed by the Austin Chronicle.

The film eventually became mired in legal difficulties and could only be shown with Blank in person per a complicated court settlement. (He passed away in 2013.) Finally, the parties have reached a settlement that allows A Poem Is a Naked Person to be shown at SXSW. A Janus Films theatrical release and Criterion DVD release will follow.

Also confirmed on Les Blank Films' website.

This film was never released, and has rarely been shown in public except at non profit institutions with Blank in attendance. After Les Blank’s death in 2013, his son Harrod Blank came to terms with Leon Russell to re-master and release the film. Criterion and Janus Films will be distributing the film in North America. We will be offering the DVD/Blu Ray as soon as it becomes available.
