I think that it was her son, she was raped by iraqui soldiers and had teh child, taht is why she calls him a bastard and he drowned him, because of maybe desperation, the memories the child would "bring" back, a whole bunc h of emotions led to her killing the baby not just one, IMO.

Thanks, you just answered my question as well

That's really sad. Plus, the baby called Agrin's brother uncle.

How old do you suspect her to be, she looked to be 13, just old enough to have a child.

the boy was indeed Agrin's son; she continued to call him a bastard as his father was one of the Iraqi soldiers that raped her during the flashback. She continually wants to leave the child when she and her brother travel, but the brother refuses, deeming the boy family and too helpless to survive on his own. She finally resorts to killing the baby because she can no longer stand the sight of her baby, for it is a stark reminder of her raping.

I'm going to be haunted by Agrin for a long time. I don't think I've ever felt so terrible for a character in a film before.
I do wonder though, why didn't she kill the baby soon after it was born? Why wait so long, only to then kill herself after? Tragic.

@FoldingStars: I think the reason is what someone else on another thread suggested - that she didn't love the child but didn't hate him enough to kill him out of hatred (which would've been easy to do earlier) but that she concluded at some point that they were better off dead. If they were both better off dead, then that reconciled any feelings of responsibility towards him with not wanting to see him again. Bear in mind she tried to convince her brother to abandon him - she may have concluded his life would not be worth living with them or without them. If she was wondering whether his life was worth living, it's not a huge leap to ask if her own life was worth living. I think only towards the end she concluded the answer to both was "no."

I am so facinated that many viewer missing a point and get very confused about the reason Agrin wants to kill the toddler. The toddler is Agrin’s child out of rape by Saddam’s soldiers.
