I haven't cried in a movie for a long time until I saw “Turtles can Fly.

When the brother of the armless boy (Riga) was tied to a tree and left to be abandon by Agrin, I was sobbing. Just seeing that little kid cry out for his mommy is so gut wrenchingly sad. Anybody else feel the same when they saw that scene?

reply

It was the I can barley breath sort of cry! That little boy will haunt me for ever.

reply

Hey I felt the same way when I saw that part. I wanted to die just so I wouldnt have to watch it. It was very sad. Where are you from?

reply

If your talking to me, I am from California.

reply

I'm from Idaho (A small state in America), but I also served in the Kurdish regions as a US Army medic. Ever since then I have developed a fond interest in Kurdish culture and history. I've seen all of Bahman Ghobadi's films and "Turtles can fly" is by far the most emotional of them all.

reply

I know where Idaho is and I am impressed! You have actually seen all of Bahman Ghobadi's films? Wow! I am Kurdish and I havent seen them all. Well not that he has a lot or anything! I think this movie is a very beautiful film. I hope the next one he is planning on making is as good.

reply

Yes I'm rather lucky. Our town has university theater that runs many foreign films. Do you have any Kurdish movie recommendations? Bahman Ghobadi is the only Kurdish filmmaker I've heard of. Are there others?

reply

I think it is sad that there was only one copy of TCF at my video store, while movies like XXX and Wedding Date get top billing!

reply

Yes, it’s amazing how many crappy films Hollywood shoves down our throats every year. Movies like XXX and Wedding Date are heavily advertised before premiers and after DVDs are released. Producers like Bahman Ghobadi don’t have the kind of money necessary to make a big advertising campaign. It’s true for most foreign film producers.

reply

I guess all we can do is spread the word ourselves! My Sister just watched TCF last night, (she rents a lot of indie flicks and foreign films) and said it was one of the best she's seen. "Perfect" is what she called it.
I still think my favorite character is the boy with no arms. He had a wiseness about him that exceeded his years, I hardly felt I was looking at a young boy at all. He also had a very nurturing way with his nephew, it was absolutely beautiful!

reply

I agree that scene almost made me leave the theatre because it was so heart breaking.

reply

I saw this movie a month ago in Tijuana Mexico, the theater was almost empty while the line for "European Gigolo" was packed!!...so sad!..this movie is just perfect!!!...keep spreading the word people!..

reply

I invited some friends at home for the projection of this film. At the end I had to run to the garage pretending I was looking for something cause I was about to explode in tears. The same sensation happened when I saw another film: Osama.

reply

I don't think there are any other Kurdish directors because Saddam Hussein didn't give Kurds the freedom to make movies. He would kill the directors and everyone involved in it. He wouldn't even let them listen to music. It was a nice movie and I am so PROUD that so many people are talking about it and recommending it to other people. I am the most Patriotic Kurd you will ever meet. Lol

If you like the kind of movies that touch your very core and make you cry in less than 5 minutes into the film, see "Rang-e khoda" (The color of Paradise/The color of God).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0191043/

Believe me. Watch it and then post your thougths here =)

reply

absolutely agree romeovf..i never cried so much watching "Color of paradise" truly a great film. Same with TCF, cried like a baby...Two of my favorite movies...they stay with you forever...

reply

I watched this movie by accident on British television at 3am in the morning when I couldn't sleep! Why does such a beautiful movie with such a powerful message get shown at a time when everyone is asleep?

This movie should be shown at prime time and I can guarantee you that everybody would love this movie rather than the usual hollywood tripe.

reply

I agree with this thread.

I saw this movie over a year ago...
and still cry when I think about this girl and baby.

reply
