the child...

what is the relation of the child to the girl and the armless boy? from the flashbacks i thought the iraqi soldiers had raped her, and perhaps fathered the child which would explain much of the girls emotions. then again, she would be too young to be impregnated...

I just watched it for a second time and I do think it was the girls kid. Girls have been known to have kids at 10 or even younger. Sad but true. Great film though. Too bad North America didn't make films like this and not just mindless comic books.

I got the definate impression the boy was hers, a result of the rape. She could never wrap her mind around this by-product of violence and terror, even though her brother did his best for them both.

Yes, the child was hers (the flashbacks of her being raped and the fact that she said, "It is the child of those who killed our family" were enough to conclude this). Great cast!

As someone said, continue making comic book movies Hollywood.

also, the young boy calls the armless child "uncle" in one of the scenes. Definitely her child; although I wish her wasn't...

reply

actually, i believe the child is the son of the people who killed their family, hence why she didn't want to accept him as her own.. didn't want to have him as a reminder of what happened.. and also wanted to avoid having to tell him where he came from when he gets old enough to understand.

I can't understand how she could have given birth. She's like 13! And her baby is around 2 or 3... so she was around 10 or 11 when she was raped. Young girls can't have babies, she would have died in labor, or even before that.

i remember some years ago, maybe 20 or so, a brazilian eight years old girl had a baby. it was also a sad history, raped by her uncle.
is not impossible for a girl to have a baby it's "only" dangerous for both.

reply

the child is hers. she refers to it as 'the bastard child' a number of times and 'illegitimate,' the flashback clearly shows the soldiers attempting to rape her, the child calls the brother 'uncle,' the child being blind suggests there were probably issues with the pregnancy of such a young girl as well, she hates the child because it reminds her of the rape and her family being murdered.

I don't understand how this confuses people. There is no ambiguity- it is stated several times that the child is hers. Of course it's horrifying, but that fact is that child brides/mothers are very common in certain cultures. It is somewhat miraculous that she didn't die during the birth but it's also pretty amazing that there are children hobbling around with limbs that have been blown off who haven't bled to death.
