What's the deal with the henchman with the thimble on his nose?

One of Toad's henchmen has a thimble strapped over his nose. What does this reference? It can't be Jake in Chinatown can it?

I feel it must be there for a reason, I just can't figure it out.

The directors elaborate some on the commentary--they wanted to have a scarred henchman, so they thought up "Thimblenose Ted". It's thought that his nose was horribly disfigured in some undisclosed, highly embarrasing incident.

You're right. Specifically, he lost it in what they termed "a lawnmower accident." However, according to them, he lies and says it was lost in a knife fight.

It took me a while to dredge up the memory and my husband was actually the one who got it right: Lee Marvin played a double role, Kid Sheleen & Tom Strawn in "Cat Ballou"; "Tom" wore a metal nose because someone had either bitten or cut off his nose in a fight. Maybe that's where the inspiration came from.

That could be a joke reference right there. I was thinking more in terms that either his nose was blown off by a gun and wears that to cover the wound, or he is on drugs, which wiped out his nose and needs to wear that.

I would think that being a rat maybe the accident has to do with his nose being caught in a rat trap???

I was thinking it was reference to Cyrano de Bergerac (famous French dramatist and Duellist) . I also believe Cat Ballou was based on him. As was Roxanne.

If I don't make it, shoot me through the wormhole.

I believe he is based on the bad guy named Strawn in the movie Cat Ballou. He has a nose that is made of metal, where his normal nose used to be. I thought of that guy immediately when i saw the thimble nosed henchman.
