if i needed heroin

Does anybody think that Townes' song 'If I Needed You' is about heroin? It's just such a longing song written by an addict- and there's a line that goes: 'Lady's with me now, and I'll show her how to place her lilly hand in mine.' Heroin is sometimes referred to as 'Lady H,' and the word 'lilly' evokes images of flowers, like the poppy, which is used in heroin production.

..like in a dream, animals can become a manifestation of fear or another person..and i've heard townes interviewed say that he wrote the entire song, chords and all, in a dream after drinking a bottle of codeine cough syrup..woke up in the morning a played it perfect, word for word....poetry that surfaces from the dark innards could have multiple connotations....
i think the idea that the song is about heroin diminishes the value of the song...there is enough dependency on drugs in this world and i think the kind of relationship that the song begs to answer, the relationship of two people intertwined and reliable, well....it is just really rare to experience and makes the song more profoundly aching.

Do you write regularly?

no one like a snob.

oh yeah, townes is A-OK!

reply

Touche, LOL. At least the last 3 lines weren't pretentious gibberish. God must love the intellectual idiots; he made so many of 'em.

Darlin', don't ever take a Southern woman for granted

well you guys are a real blast...i am sorry if i sounded pretentious, i guess that can happen when you get overzealous about a songwriter...which i am about townes, and i do write every freaking chance i get...love townes, period..obviously you two are "buh-huh,huh-what-he said-" kind of sycophants who do not strive to express yourselves clearly...i apologize for flying over your head.please,go back to your blather.

damn, get over yourself. it's not that you're writing anything complex, it's that you sound too into yourself - pretentious. that's some annoying, sad *beep* Try a little humility when you post, you'll get more people to respond and relate to you.

townes van zandt does perform some great, emotive stuff though, no?

reply

Heroin? No this song ain't about heroin. Now the song with the line about the "ugly horse" in "Two Girls" is and also Kathleen, but not this one. This is a love song. Fran said she knows where this song came from... even if Townes didn't.

reply

It may be about both. I wasn't a black and white kinda guy.

what a pair of jerk-offs.

these are the kind of guys who call you queer if you speak in complete sentences. the pretension police really ought to pick up idiots like this, who feel compelled to reduce every conversation to insults from the dark.

reply

that is so annoying. when will people stop trying to reduce good songs to drug songs? why do you care?

reply

I don't think he was being pretentious. Maybe you're too used to only reading and writing blogs.

Why would somebody want to know the deeper meaning of a song? Yeah, that's a tough one to figure out... Jesus, it's not like the guy is insinuating LSD references in the Happy Birthday song.
