Fuu what a selfish, ungrateful bitch!

That. Kept saying how Jin and Mugen were useless bodyguards. Well, guess what, the world doesn't revolve around you. She was never grateful for all they did for her, including saving her life countless times. I hate her character so far.

reply

While they do save her, they are kinda bad bodyguards. All Mugen wants to do is fight and Jin wants to die, neither wants to be protecting her. They usually run off on their own at each new town leaving Fuu by herself.

reply

Fuu doesn't come off very well in a lot of the episodes-it is true that she's very mean to Mugen and Jin. And I don't think they deserved it-Jin quickly became a comforting presence to her and someone she could talk to, and Mugen always worried about her and went to rescue her. I think a lot of it has to do with their age-Fuu is only fifteen, and Mugen is nineteen and Jin is twenty. At that age people do tend to be a bit more self-centered. I think by the end of the show they were all very caring towards each other. And what a moment in Elegy of Entrapment when Sara had Mugen down!

That's what made her so believable to me.
After all, she is a young girl.

THIS RIGHT HERE BASICALLY!! FEMALES,ESPECIALLY YOUNGER FEMALES,TEND TO BE VERY VAIN

reply

I like Fuu. She is grounded and most human of the trio. I'm so glad they created other female characters that were tough and hard core fighter but left Fuu alone. She is the plot. There'd be no point of the journey with out her. I especially love how they didn't try to force a romantic relationship between any of these characters. I get that some people only want female characters who are a certain way. Overly sexualized or boys with boobs are usually the only types of female characters but Fuu isn't. She's not trying to make a living on her back but through hard work.

yeah, like if it weren't for them Fuu would've been dead long ago lol

Doubtful. There have been likable female leads in anime before 2004.

I don't need to be Sherlock to know that there are many strong likable female leads in anime before 2004, even ones I don't know of or are not too familiar with them. There's no need to be a dick, even if you're correct that there are many beyond 2004 who are strong or likable. Because you suggested Fuu as 'the first likable lead', it's only natural to suggest that what you're saying is that female characters weren't strong, sympathetic, likable characters prior to 2004. So:

Lucy/Nyuu (Elfen Lied) was exactly 2004. Revy (Black Lagoon) is 2006. Seras Victoria and Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (Hellsing) are both 2001 and 2006-2014. There's four for post-2004 and two for pre-2004.

Winry Rockbell, Izumi Curtis, Riza Hawkeye, Pinako Rockbell, and Olivier Mira Armstrong (exclusive only to Brotherhood) from Fullmetal Alchemist. Original series: 2003-2004, and Brotherhood: 2009-2010. That's now nine for post, and seven for pre.

Motoko Kusunagi from Ghost in the Shell. 1995 was the first film. Stand Alone Complex: 2002. Sequel: 2004. The Laughing Man: 2005. Solid State Society: 2006. Arise: 2013. Now it's ten for post and eight for pre.

Deunan from Appleseed. OVA: 1988. First movie: 2004. Second movie: 2007. TV series: 2011. Alpha: 2014. Eleven post, nine pre.

Tima from Metropolis: 2002. Twelve post, ten pre.

San from Princess Mononoke (1997), Sen from Spirited Away (2001), Sofî from Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Sheeta from Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986). Thirteen post, fourteen pre, and those are just the ones I've seen.

Makoto Konno from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: 2006. Fourteen post, fourteen pre.

Haruko Haruhara from Fooly Cooly: 2000. Fourteen post, fifteen pre.

Birdy from Birdy the Mighty and Birdy the Mighty: Decode (1996 and 2008). Fifteen post, sixteen pre.

Yoko Littner/Ritona from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007). Sixteen post, sixteen pre.

Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan (2013). Seventeen post, sixteen pre.

Fuu from Samurai Champloo (2004). Eighteen post, sixteen pre.

Black Rock Shooter from the anime with the same title; OVA: 2009. TV show: 2012. Nineteen post, sixteen pre.

And those are just the ones I'm taking the time to remember. It's actually harder to find strong female characters after 2004. Pre-2004, including characters that appeared before and after 2004. But if you tally it up to just their first appearance alone, it'd be:

Post: 9 strong female characters (Black Rock Shooter, Fuu, Mikasa, Yoko, Makoto, Sofî, Olivier, Lucy/Nyuu, and Revy)
Pre: 15 strong female characters (Birdy, Haruko, San, Sen, Kiki, Sheeta, Tima, Deunan, Motoko, Winry, Izumi, Riza, Pinako, Seras, and Integra)

You're more than welcome to add to the chart thing or whatever.

I wasn't being 'pissy', I was responding to how I interpreted your statement. And no, none of the female protagonists in the Ghibli movies are tsunderes, antiheroes, or whatever. Neither is Tima, or Motoko, or Makoto.

I don't think Fuu is a bitch, either. You just seemed to think I hated Fuu, when actually I was just disagreeing that you because it sounded like you disliked most female characters in one way or other before 2004. I don't know. It was 2 in the morning. LOL.

Well following that logic one of them would be dead too. It's not like Fuu did nothing! She worked and contributed too.
