What is Ella actually supposed to be?

Just a witch? Or an angel or something?

She says she's an anointed one. At one point she mentioned she worked for God.

I hate that they never elaborated more on the characters. I know Cassie was a witch but why did Azazeal want McBain women? Especially when it's shown that he's trying to mate with any witch (like the one Ella killed)? Surely any witch would do, so why keep going after the McBain women? Although Cassie's mum wasn't a McBain, she married one. And what about Cassie's dad?

They really needed more explanation. The show was so vague, especially when they switched the storyline from Season 1 to 2.

To answer some of the above questions;

Ella is the Anointed One. This basically means that she's the Hand of God. Whenever God wants someone dead, He sends Ella to kill them.

Why does Azazeal want McBain women? A few centuries ago, Rachel McBain was the lady of Medenham Hall. A witch, she successfully summoned Azazeal from Hell, and as a result she cursed her own bloodline and forever linked her family to Azazeal: only McBain women can become pregnant with Azazeal's child. That's why Azazeal seeks out female McBain descendants and also why Ella does around killing them.

The blonde girl in Victorian times whom we see Ella murdering in her bed (after Azazeal had slept with her) was a McBain.

Cassie's mother Lilith married a McBain. Azazeal seduced her and drove her mad in order to manipulate events so that Cassie would be enrolled as a student at Medenham, the place where Azazeal arose from Hell and therefore where he's most powerful.

So then Cassie isn't in the McBain bloodline. right?

Looking again at my previous post in this thread, I didn't fully explain that Cassie is the result of Lilith's marriage to a McBain.

A lot wasn't explained in the show and I'm not surprised at all.
They lost the central character because Christina Cole decided to move on so they had to rush into a completely different storyline with a new main character. During your first two seasons you have to establish a solid cast and direction which they failed to do. Viewers fell with every episode and it was cancelled. It was a nice idea though. Such a shame they couldn't get the right committed parties.

Her father is Dr. John Dee, try googling him and you'll understand better. For those of us that study magical history Dr. Dee is well-known. Think of him as an English Nostradamus. Advisor to Elizabeth I, scientist, astrologer, alchemist, etc. Part of the joke when Ella receives the old box from her solicitor.
