was it Love?

does anyone think that Azazeal really loved Cassie, or was he just saying that he had feelings for her to get what he wanted? Its so hard to tell! any ideas?

reply

I don't think he was. If he really loved her he would have died first instead of Cassie

When I first watched it, some years ago, I thought he was loved her a bit. Watching it again, I don't think he was even fond of her. IMO, it is obvious for me he was using her. Each gesture of his was calculated for his seduction, and he was enjoying this game. He didn't even felt sad about her death, only a little shocked possibly because she was the mother of his child.

Azazeal is a fallen angel of thousands (millions? billions?) of years, he witnessed the dawn of creation, had many many women and girls before Cassie, women of different backgrounds and personalities, be them strong, weak, naive, experienced, etc. I doubt he found any novelty in Cassie he didn't find before. There is no way he would "fall in love" by a teen girl with no experience in life whatsoever (I don't even think e is capable of loving someone). He probably regards humans as lesser beings, for him and his kind to use as a mean to an end, fun, destruction etc. Azazeal is evil (that is clear in the series) Cassie was a vessel for him to bring the Antichrist to earth.

Many people regard their story as a love story. It isn't. There is no epic love story here. This isn't Buffy and Angel. It is a story a million years old demon seducing a young girl for her to bring the birth of the Antichrist.

I agree, in my opinion, he never loved her. For one thing, he would always try to make her see it his way, that he was right and just for all the bad things he did. He would implant doubts that would torture Cassie’s mind to no end. He used her own mother to give her that jinxed necklace, and the main insult, he killed her best friend Thelma and still has the nerve to use Thelma’s grief to get the powerful amber pendent for his own benefit. Oh yeah, and sleeping with Cassie’s teacher and rubbing it in her face. Azazeal may have loved her because he finally got a son he wanted from her, but that was the extent of his love. It was never because of who Cassie was as a person. That’s just what I thought.

Azazeal shows some emotion when he watches Cassie's spirit say goodbye to Thelma. But other than that, he used Cassie to create a son and accomplish his mission. As others mentioned, Cassie is not the first beautiful woman he has encountered.

I don't doubt that he told every girl (well the important ones - Pharoh's daughter and the blonde one in the 19th century flashback) in his past that he loved them so he could knock them up.
After all, all he really wanted was Malachi, Cassie was merely the vessel.

Am i the only one who watched "death of the mother" Of course he loved her, the whole time he was trying to get them to be a real family and give her whatever she wanted to stay....some people need to back track there dvd players! By the way who didn't love the afternoon delight that was going on in that episode....this relationship made the show watchable and enjoyable!

reply

it was obvious he loved her, he didn't just come across an attractive teenage girl but it was meant to be, destiny for want of a better word, he had been waiting for her for a while. Wonder if I was watching the same scenes as those who think he didn't love her.

reply

Without a doubt he loved her. He cried when he saw her spirit with Thelma in her last episode. In her death episode he was in pain to see her die. Was upset when she was dead. some could argue he was even more vengeful towards Ella after she killed her. He was jealous of Troy when she liked him. If he didn't love her he would have killed her or not tried to get her back after she tried to kill their baby or when she kidnapped him. Also he wouldn't have had her protected after the birth once he had what he wanted. The man may have been a bad guy but that doesn't mean he could not love. Part of the reason I love the show is the complexity of the character and Cassie's too. I feel his weakness was Cassie. He mentioned a few times their love was fated and that he has waited 2 hundred some odd years for her.

I have more reason but I dont want to rant too long.

reply

Yes I believe he did - as another poster has said when he was trying to get her to be a family with him and the baby; what else other then love would have been the idea behind that? He had the son he wanted, he had got the sacrifice with Thelma for his strength etc he in essence didn't need Cassie, but he wanted her.

Yes, and he did all this in front of Cassie and other people he could manipulate. Azazel is EVIL. He wants to bring the destruction of humanity. Him wanted to form a "family" with Cassie was nothing more than power play and to find a nanny for Malachi, because I doubt he really cared for Malachi to bother in raising him. Malachi is another means to an end for him. Do people really think he was pained to see the death of Cassie? Come on! Just because he told Cassie he loved her and they were meant to be doesn't mean he does really love her.

The problem is that some people regard Azazel as a "bad guy, but human, with feelings, etc. He is not. He is not a reformed criminal, he is a demon who is planning the death of billions of people. But who cares! He is only misunderstood. And this teen girl showed this demon what "true love" is.

If Azazel was an ugly fat guy I doubt there would be so many defenders of his and Cassie's "love story"

reply

No, he didn't love her. He just used her.

However, she represented life to him, and he had a lust for that. It's quite common; mistaking lust for love, but he never did. He may have wanted to try to be a family, but he didn't love her.

Some people on this board have twisted ideas on what love actually is. I agree with fluffs, there's a clear difference between lust and love. Azzazeul loved the power he had over Cassie, and he loved that he finally succeeded in getting a son....that's about as much true love he has for Cassie. He obviously cared for her, but I think he cared for her because she is the mother of his child. And someone else said he was probably drawn to the life and innocence Cassie had, that I definitely agree with! I honestly think Azzazeul was the typical manipulative power hungry playa! Again, he LOVED the power he had over Cassie. He wanted them to be a family, but how far would that go if he was more obsessed with power and making sure Malaki fulfills his destiny as antichrist?

If the actress who played Cassie were to stay, it would have likely developed into something more than lust between the two; however, there (whatever they had) developed in 5 episodes....in their time, probably two months?

And keep in mind, he tricked Cassie into having sex with him, and that's how they conceived Malaki! Technically rape....NOT love!

I think the hotness of Michael Fassbender and the sexy chemistry between Azzazeul and Cassie clouds some peoples' judgment on what love is!
