Why the show didn't work

I watched this show when I studied abroad in Ireland when the second season was going on. I thought it had promise, but it never quite delivered. There seemed to be no set plan for the show, like the writers were making stuff up as they went. There's no direction to the show at all.

And as for Ella--she seemed so badass in the first episode. But then she started acting like a stupid teenage girl instead of a centuries old, battle-hardened warrior. Even the fight scenes with her are bad; they look like how I fight my brother when he steals the TV remote. And what they end up doing with Roxanne is just stupid.

I watch it for the nostalgia, but am not at all surprised it got canceled. I'm not going to ruin the ending for those who haven't seen it, but it's very unsatisfying. Could have been an awesome show, too bad...

I was terribly disappointed with the Ella character. She's supposed to be some kind of slayer, but unlike Buffy she had also been around for over 3 centuries, so why does she turn into a stupid schoolgirl, however hormonal she may be feeling? And Buffy killed Angel when he was evil and didn't go on dates with him in 1930s Berlin!

As much as I loved Hex, I'll be the first to admit that it was a heavily flawed show. I agree with practically everything that the original poster has written.

the way they wrote it as well, in the first series it started with cassie with magic powers, then the story just went s&#@ and it turn out nothing like they, made the story look like to begin with. then it transposed over to the second series and the story line changed dramatically not even in a good way. they pretty much change the lead cast, and brought the supporting acts to the lead, and again it started off with potential then it went to s&#@.

I live in my own world, But that's ok they know me there

To be fair, the writers didn't have much choice about changing the storylines, as Christina Cole (the actress who played Cassie) had decided to leave the show. In hindsight, maybe the producers should have just re-cast the role.

I agree with you. Have her change her 'form' in the story line to explain having a new actress in the lead. For this kind of show, that sort of thing would work.

Actors leave series all the time, although in the US they usually avoid this by putting the leads on 5 to 7 year contracts right from the beginning but I've noticed that seriess in other countries seem to have no problem with actors leaving series after the first season if the actor wants to leave in the US unless an actor makes life on the set unbearable the producers and network will put up with an actors nonsense for awhile before they decide to fire them e.g. Charlie Sheen and Shannen Doherty.

If a US series made the kind of casts and story line changes like they did with this series and the series "Bedlam" people would just stop watching but people seem to be fine with the changes in other countries for the most part. The series "Torchwood" is another series that changed most of it's first season cast.

So Ms. Cole wanting to leave is not an excuse. It's not like she just up and left at the last minute, I just finished watching the entire series, and they did bring on a new character, Ms. Cole even appeared in the second series and that helped with the continuity. I don't think re-casting the role would have worked killing her off wasn't a bad idea, it was the way they scripted the series after she left and the two new cast additions in Ella and Malachi actually gave the series some potential that the writers failed to utilize.

I don't think they had a clear direction wjen they started the second series, and it's not the first series in history to start out with a good concept before it goes into production and then fizzle when it's actually executed.

It's funny that on BBC America which is currently re-airing the episodes with an emphasis on Michael Fassbender being the star is rediculous he's hardly in any of the episodes for any length of time. If anything he's more like a special guest star.

I agree with the OP they had a new lead charatcer and could have written better story lines for the Ella character, but it was unbelievable that she had been around for 500 years and didn't use better judgement, and I attribute that to bad writing, and it does appear they were just making it up as they went along.

They had also inroduce a full grown Malachi who I gueaa was suppose to be a replacement for his departed father.

Movies will make you famous; Television will make you rich; But theatre will make you good.

I kind of agree, OP. I love "Hex", but it just never lives up to its potential. And it never decides on what kind of show it wants to be. I much preferred it's original direction...atmospheric, spooky, slow-paced, gothic horror drama about witches, family, centuries old secrets, fallen angels, and the like as opposed to the slightly darker "Charmed" it eventually became.

Agreed, it has nostalgia value, but several plot holes and incoherencies. Like you said, there was no real direction, each episode seemed improvised.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)
