OT: UK Comedies

I'm an American and I can't get enough of the UK comedies.

I started with Green Wing, then The Office, Not Going Out, Mayo, Coupling, Worst Week of My Life.

Can anyone recommend more like these? Silly UK comedies that are hillarious!

Thx...mate!

reply

I really recommend "Spaced" and "Black Books". They're both brilliant shows. Enjoy!

reply

I agree about Spaced and Black Books. Also recommend:

My Family
Absolutely Fabulous
The Fast Show (sketch)
Smack the Pony (sketch)
How Do You Want Me (another Dylan Moran show)
Father Ted
Red Dwarf (for sci fi and comedy)
Chef!
Keeping Up Appearances
The Thin Blue Line
Blackadder
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Hardware

for more Sarah Alexander, All the Small Things is a good show, though more a drama type series.

Cold Feet is also a good show, comedy and drama

and of course...the classics:
Are You Being Served?
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python's Flying Circus

I'm sure I could list more I think I have forgotten half of what I've watched. LOL

[I'm American too.:)]

That's the virtual horizon--it's better than the actual horizon

I recently discovered "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps" and another series called "Shameless"....

I add them to my recommend list

The wages of sin are death-but by the time they take taxes out it's just a tired feeling really

The previous replies included some pretty old stuff -
but also try these as they are available ( can't tell you where otherwise I'll get a torrent of abuse )
- Outnumbered ( Award winner )
- Pulling ( Award winner )
- Peep Show ( Award winner )
- Monkey Dust ( A very good and raunchy cartoon but has some real " Near the mark issues )cast members as expected went on to greater things ( Pulling )
- 15 storeys High
- The Royle Family ( ( Award winner )( Very English )
- Also Check Bafta's etc for good stuff.

PS - Whats Mayo ???? - ( I live in NZ )

reply

Peep Show's overrated. The Royle Family is one of the worst things I've ever seen. 15 Storeys had, like, one good episode and Monkey Dust was complete sh!t.
Haven't seen Outnumbered or Pulling, but they can't be any good or I'd have heard something.

(And Game On was way better than 2 Pints of Lager any day.)

I like jumping on bandwagons.

reply

Why would Outnumbered and Pulling being good equate to you having heard something about them.

Outnumbered was hidden fairly successfully in the schedules and I didn't even know it existed until the second series - it's absolutely fantastic and luckily it keeps going despite the BBCs best efforts to hamstring it.

I've never actually seen Pulling, that's probably buried somewhere with zero marketing support too. It's a miracle any decent alternative comedy ever gets heard of when it's treated so badly by the Beeb.

reply

Seriously, watch outnumbered and the I.T crowd. hilarious!, also try gavin and stacey, Him and her ( just started, but really funny) And the best of all....INBETWEENERS! The funniest comedy ever!

Ps, i agree with u, the peep show is overrated and i never really liked the royal family.

reply

Peep Show's not overrated its very underrated and absolutely hilarious, depends on your taste but most people I know like it. Father Ted, Men Behaving Badly and Blackadder are also brilliant.

"No kitty! This is my pot pie!"

reply

agreed Peep Show is amazing, surprisingly consistent and for a British comedy series has longevity(6 series so far).

I would say anything attached to Chris Morris is touched by genius, specifically Day Today and Brass Eye (the peaedophile episode is the funniest thing i have ever seen) and also the Mighty Boosh is unreal, some episodes can be a bit hit and miss but the improvisation and interplay between the two main characters is brilliant and the songs are pretty good too. Really surreal, watch the Old Gregg and crimping episodes and prepare to be amazed!

"is that a chinese baby?"
"sure is, japanese to be specific"

i know pretty much all of these have been said but you really need to make it a priority to watch the following:

only fools and horses (NOT THE SPIN OFFS)
spaced,
black books,
the IT crowd,
peep show,
extras,
the vicar of dibly (although thats VERY english humour)
the mighty boosh,
shameless,
the inbetweeners,
little britain (i think that may be pretty big over there too though)
"i'm alan partridge" & it's sister show "knowing me knowing you"
the fast show.

all of these are total gems

Black Book
Little Britain
IT Crowd
The Mitchell and Webb Show
Coupling
Spaced
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Gavin and Stacy
Love Soup
Episodes

reply

I agree with most of these--very funny. Older, but the Vicar of Dibley was so funny, I'd have to pause it sometimes to stop laughing so I could hear the next line. Especially the dirty jokes at the end of every episode. Classic!

Extras (Recommend)
Thin Blue Line
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Spaced (Recommend)
Peep Show (Recommend)
IT Crowd (Recommend)
Big Train

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (Recommend)
Nathan Barley
The Mighty Boosh
Quite a few of Channel 4 comedies are pretty good which alot of these are on (including Green Wing) that channel. Maybe if you can somehow look at the Channel 4 comedy listing you'll find quite alot of Comedies. They are usually at the centre for more unique, out there, alternative comedy shows as opposed to BBC shows although not all of them are golden.
