Fingersmith: Maud dialog in the cottage question

After the marriage, Sue "prepares...[Maud]...for her wedding night" and Maud says, "come here" and then flings Sue lovingly on the bed. As she does that, Maud says something like "I confess to feeling warm if I can feel your lips on me" and something else too. What is the exact dialog?

reply

It's... "I can bear to feel him on me, if I can feel your lips on me.. ....If I feel you inside me." (She's mentioning Rivers...)

Btw... I love how she says, "We weren't dreaming, were we?!" Great acting...

reply

In what scene did she say this? This is a great quote...

reply

Thanks, when she says "we weren't dreaming, were we" I thought of Nicole Kidman. That's exactly how Nicole would have played it, with a little snarl of passion.

I find amazing (when this whole scene starts) is the way Maud tries to make eye contact with Sue when she is undressing her. The first "look at me"... and Sue cannot do this.. She is in such a heartache trying to hide herself behind her performance as a maid. Maud has no other choice than follow the nightgown ritual... The way she still stares at Sue while the nightgown falls, and the way she says the second "come here" is not an invitation, but an order! Full of desire and love, but still an order...

reply

I have to agree with you. The acting is really strong.

Yeah and they had clothes on too. It was also really hot in the scene when Maud asks Sue "What must a wife do on her wedding night?". I like how they keep their clothing on but still keep it passionate because in a lot of movies they always take them off. It's nice to see Fingersmith's uniqueness in that way.

I don't think Sue were virgin.. she knew "sex affairs" yet.. it appears more in the book.

Sue also says in the book that Mrs. Sucksby was very careful to "keep her away from that sort of thing" when she's recalling her very little experience with boys from the Borough; so yes indeed, they were both virgins.

reply

I don't think so either... doesn't she make a comment to Charles about a man being a "good poke"?
Isn't poke a slang for sex?

reply

No it's Victorian slang for a thief who then fences the goods. They were definitely virgins, sue said that neither her or Maud had had a sweetheart.

I'm Bi so what!

reply

yeah, that's right

she says that in the first part when she's explaining the relationship Maud and she had...

as they were like sister, like the sisters they both never had... and like her, Maud never had a sweetheart...

something like that

so, yeah, you may asume that they were both virgins...

i don't think the sex readings were unvirgining her... it's more like for Maud those books were death... she didn't feel anything until she met Sue... remember??? second part, when Maud is telling her story

reply

She was a virgin, cause Mrs Sucksby kept the boys away from her. She knew things from Dainty. :)

reply

I always thougth that Sue was unable to look at Maud because of the shame she felt for sleeping with Maud. Shame and desire for wanting to do it again. And of course because of the betrayl that Sue is about to bring upon Maud.

reply

I don't think she was ashame about sleeping with her...

because you can see that she really love it... it's clear when she says to maud "you pearl"... it kinda feels like Sue's glad it happened...

the thing is she couldn't bear to look at her in the eys because she was in love with Maud already and her purpose was nothing but to eventually betray her... and she didn't want to do that...

reply

that part is heartbreaking...

Maud desperately trying to make Sue love her like she loves her... and Sue fighting against being in love with her and having to betray her... all at the same time...

elaine cassidy is a terrific atress like Sally Hawkings they both play beatifully their role

I particularly like the scene where Maud is asking what a wife must do on her wedding night...

Maud: on her wedding night, what must a wife do? - turns to Sue - I know you're awake. Sue!
Sue: For God's sake, miss.
Maud: What? (she says it sooo freaking cutelyyyy)
Sue: You must know
Maud: I know something from books.
Sue: How can you learn from books??
Maud: You're right, i know nothing, nothing, nothing! What will happen? Will he kiss me??
Sue: I should thinks so, miss. [THIS PART IS FREAKING HILARIOUS... SUE'S FACEEEE IS SO FUNNY, LIKE "AHHMMM, YESS, DUH! HE HAS TO KISS YOU"... I laughed so much when I first saw it]

reply

I thought the exact same thing! Very Nicole Kidman.

reply

haha... i always thought elaine cassidy looks like a young nicole kidman!! anyway, i only know of elaine cassidy after watching this great movie.

reply

that was such a great scene! both actresses were so amazing and convincing
especially Sally Hawkins

reply

I thought they were saying these...

Maud: You did it before..to the sake of tonight.

Maud: We weren't dreaming, were we?

Sue: That was just to start you off miss...

Maud: Were you?

Sue: Yes yes!

Maud: I can't, if I have to feel your warm, if I don't feel you lips on me, if I haven't feel you inside me.

reply

I just loved Elaine in this scene. She pulled it off so well. You could just feel the love projecting from her eyes. Gotta love that little snarl also as she says "You did it once, for the sake of tonight." So sexy!

reply

I love that too!!! I'm yelling at the tube going "KISS HER!!!"

"I do believe I will be with 1 person for the rest of my life...but that person will be a woman."

reply

I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you all. That scene of these 2 girls with clothes on, standing and not doing much but kissing (before Maud pushes Sue on the bed), was a lot more sexier than any of the love scenes in Tipping. Elaine was awesome - just brimming with lust especially the way she said "we weren't dreaming were we?".

reply

Yeah, Elaine looked like she could eat up Sally alive. Such passion. Great acting from both of them and they didn't have to be naked.

reply

I adore that scene as well. OOO soo sexy. I fell in love with Elaine. What can I say.. I like women who are agressive.
;)

Pure hottness!!

reply

I think I'm also in love with her now...
awesome acting!

reply

I have a problem - I cannot decide who I like more. One day its Elaine and the next day its Sally!!??

reply

Same problem))))

reply

I like Elaine always more than anyone:D<3 She is so lovely:)

reply

LOL there sure are a *lot* of deleted by an administrator messages in this thread!! I *wonder* what they said!?

BTW, I agree it was a great scene. And also that imaginative eroticism (with clothes on) can be far more erotic than flesh and tits flying everywhere lol.

reply

the deleted posts are mine, imdb made a mistake and accidently erased all my posts-I was not amused.lol

reply

Ah... so what did they say? heh.

reply

They just said it was a mistake and they couldn't retrieve them.I put a lot of work into my posts infact they are masterpieces-you missed out not being able to see them.lol

reply

No... I meant what did the *posts* say lol. Never mind... I'll just have to live in wonder.

reply

They were just about sue and maud and how great that scene was,how the chemistry and acting were amazing.

reply

ditto!

reply

and you can not only see love projecting

you can also feel the desperation she's feeling!

how the eyes moveee

my God... they're both great actresses
