Favorite Scenes

List your favorite scene(s) of Fingersmith here!

Although I loved everything in the drama, I would have to say that one of my most favorite scenes is the second love scene in the cottage. Elaine's performance was just electrifying!

Oh and I also love the dialogue back and forth between Maud and Sue when Maud asks "What must a wife do on her wedding night?"

S: "For God's sake, Miss!
M: "What?"
S: "You must know..."
M: "I know something from books."
S: "How can you know it from books?"
M: "You're right. I know nothing, nothing, nothing!"

So cute!

I agree! The containment of laughter was evident on both of their faces and it was so adorable!

I'm also surprised that there are so many comedic scenes here and there throughout the drama. I always find myself laughing with Maud's "I think I need to go to the privy!" and "It rushes!" LOL!

Dainty, it seems, was a great supportive friend to Sue in the novel. It was a pity this wasn't reflected more in the adaptation. I would have liked to have seen the part where she gave Sue the pound she had saved up for her own funeral just so Sue could go find Maud. *sigh* Sometimes I wish we had a 4-hour drama instead of 3 just so the ending wouldn't seem so rushed.

Have you read Affinity yet? I'm on the verge of starting. I wonder if it's as good as FS.

You have got a point there. But I don't know why the book doesn't have the part where Maud says "...I love you" in the end as it does in the movie. I think if that part was included in the novel, it would have made the book outstanding. I'm not criticizing (sp?) or anything, I still think the book is good.

I agree! I think the omission of the "I love you" made it seem as if something was lacking. After all that they've been through together, neither Sue nor Maud said "I love you" to each other in the book. That is why I believe that the book and the adaptation strongly complement each other. Only with both of them do I feel that the story is "complete."

Also, do you notice that the second love scene in the book nowhere near matches the passion of the second love scene in the adpatation? Sue coldy dismisses Maud in the novel, whereas in the adaptation they both unleash their desire for each other for that last time. I, for one, am really GLAD that the screen writer took it upon himself to make that scene more romantic.

That is true to some degree, but I don't think that Sue was ashamed of her love for Maud because of what she feared others might think. I think she was ashamed of having to betray Maud in the end and that giving in would make it seem all that much harder to go through with the scheme. Thus, she shies away from Maud's obvious affections to make it easier on her conscience once Maud is put in the madhouse.

My bad. I thought you were defending Sue's fear as her being ashamed of loving Maud.

This is always the case with adaptations, either from books to TV serials or books to movies. The producers, writers, director, etc, have to assess on how the viewrs will react and they usually always gloss over the more controversial issues. But as far as adaptations go, this is by far one of the best.

It's no problem at all! Anyone can easily misintrepret words when there are no facial expressions to go on. That's the internet for ya ;)

ETA: I just finished "Affinity." It's a very depressing thing, isn't it? I feel just like Margaret after reading it. Shocked. Sad. Haunted. I think I need to read Fingersmith again to cheer myself up!

"Emptiness" is exactly the word to describe how Affinity's ending affects you. Sarah Waters must have been in a very dark phase of her life when she was writing that piece! I wonder if Selina ever really cared for Margaret. Gosh, I really do hate Ruth Vigers at the moment!

Oh I know! I always laugh at that scene. Elaine is just so cute with her "What?" and Sally is so comical pretending to sleep.

Hmm I must go back and check. I think she says something like "Poor little scraps."

Another scene that I found funny:
When Sue is filing Maud's tooth down and she mentions Mrs. Sucksby. Maud asks who is Mrs. Sucksby and Sue just says "A parlour maid, went bad, had twins." She said it so quickly and matter-of-factly that it was just so funny for some reason.

The scene where Maud is out painting and looking at Sue sleeping and then Mr. Rivers catches her gaze after how she didn't even notice when the red paint drops on her. He realizes that she wants Sue.

In the book it is also then when Maud realizes how badly she lusts after Sue and feels that it was Mr. Rivers that pointed out to her that she thinks of Sue than just a maid.

I have so many fave scenes. Here they are:

1) The thimble scene
2) The scene where Maud pins a brooch over Sue's dress and smoothing Sue's dress. The way they look at each other. Heartbreaking!!
3) The scene where Maud gives Sue her dress and puts over her body and Maud stands behind Sue in front of the mirror
4) The rain scene where Maud is afraid of the thunder and hugs Sue and Sue is comforting her
5) The pond scene where Maud looks at Sue lustfully while Sue is sleeping
6) The scene where Sue helps Maud to put the necklace of Maud's mother over her neck. Maud is sooo tortured cos Sue is touching her and she wants to touch Sue back but she is afraid to do so. Sue is aware of that too, and she looks kinda confused. (But i've never seen this scene in the whole movie on youtube. Only got to see it in a few fanmade music video on youtube. Was it cut or what? Can someone help me?)
7) And of course! The love scenes!!!!!!!!!

reply

oh, and one more!!!

The scene where Sue takes off her clothes to change in her nightgown. The look on Maud's face. Whoa!! That did it for her and she can't fight her feelings and her lust for Sue anymore, hence their first love making.

reply

I love the scene where Sue teaches Maud how to kiss and the subsequent kissing. :D

reply

Hey melskyway, your point 6, the necklace scene, was it you who asked me to put that scene on you tube? i can't find the post. it looks like you found the scene on there, did you see it on Fingersmith - A Beautiful Love by zzdapp at 1:38? it was cut by the way, it does go on for a little longer in the movie.

reply

hi mitoew-1, i saw that scene on Fingersmith Burn video. it was cut from the movie in youtube. but was it cut from the dvd?

reply

Hi melskyway, the scene is definitely in the movie on the dvd i have. the fan vids cut the length of the scene. i don't know whether the fan vids use the clips available on youtube or they use the movie they have on dvd.

reply

ohh i see.. that explains. that scene is really well acted out by both actresses. too bad it's not in the youtube movie, except for the fan vids. possible for you to upload the movie in youtube, or just that scene? else i'm going to have to buy that dvd just for that scene!!! thanks.

reply

hmmm i'm sure i'd get into a bit of strife if i uploaded the whole movie. and i'm unsure of how to use my movie maker so i don't know whether i can do it for you. but if you buy the movie the better because the more money they make from these kinds of movies the more movies they will make :)

The part that always makes me laugh is just before the first love scene when Sue says "I should think so miss." The look on her face is priceless!

Romantically I love the second love scene the best because it has no pretenses. Its very raw and passionate the way Maud jumps Sue, knowing she is about to betray her.

I also very much like the part where Sue removes Maud's gloves. It's such a tender gesture.

reply

Any scene Elaine and Sally are both in, esp.

1) Sue smoothes Maud's tooth with a thimble, and she looked as if she were going to kiss Maud.
2) Sue removes Maud's gloves

These two intimate scenes are the most erotically-charged, non-kissing, no-love-making scenes. Are Sarah Waters, filmmakers, DOP and the actresses geniuses or what? You'd never imagine smoothing a sharp tooth or removing some gloves would be so sexy that causes "a curious wanting thing" in yourself.

3) Both love scenes.

Neither contains nudity, but huh, they did it again! I can't believe it. I love the second one the most, the raw passion exudes out of Maud when she pounces Sue, and the sexy words the flew. Oh God.

4) The confrontation scene. Sue storms in, and Maud yells back and refutes the first time in her time.
5) They are fIlled with words of how I want you, how...I love you. The scene owns. And Sue wets her thumb and rubs off the ink on Maud's forehead, awwwww

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.

Maud: If only I could escape & get to Sue

Maud: Please don't touch me, stifle me, smother me, pretend to love me, + Sucksby's response
