Sue got utterly cheated...

Since Sue was actually the daughter of Marianne Lilly it felt so cruel towards her to receive the lot of a commoner while Maud grew up to be a proper lady. Had I learned that I was someone completely different than I actually was I would have felt devastated when finding out the truth. Yet Sue appears to take it all with calm, she was the one who was supposed to be in Maud's position and Maud in hers, I honest to whatever holy power there is out there hope that they will see to it that she will at least learn how to read and hopefully more as well.

I think it was set up to show you that both girls' lot in life was a difficult one. Sue, growing up a thief in poverty yet with the love of Mrs. Sucksby, Maud, growing up unloved and used in such a humiliating, abusive way by her uncle, used to make money out of pervs when they get to enjoy her readings of his filthy books, without her feelings regarding this ever being considered (plus the physical punishment/s and constant restraints and deprivation).
