Was Gentleman...

... gay? I rewatched this today, and it seemed like he had zero interest in Maud sexually. It seemed like maybe him and Charles had had something going on when they were at Briar, and maybe that was why Charles wanted to follow him around like a puppy. Or at least Charles had a major crush on him. Or was it just because Gentleman was so impressed by Charles' boot-polishing technique (come to think of it, that sounds a bit like a euphemism!)I remember there was a bit in the book when Sue gets angry at Charles and slaps him and calls him a Nancy, so there maybe could be something in it.

I have not watched the series yet but in the book he is (or he is at least bisexual).

I just read the book and, from my understanding, it was a joke among the petty thieves that he was gay because he'd been upper class. But that was never confirmed anywhere.

I personally never got the impression that he was gay. He just seemed like someone who was more obsessed with money for validation than sex. His sexuality is kind of irrelevant to the story.

The guy we're meeting with can't even grow his own hair?!? COME ON!!!-Gob

This is the impression I got too (from the mini-series) and I also think Mrs. Sucksby would have instructed him not to touch Maud (she could explain it as needing her for the next part in the plot, when really she was just protecting her daughter).

I wondered too. It's left open-ended.
