Is Argentina that depressed/morbid?

Obviously there's only so much you can learn about a country from reading about it in articles and watching a TV show, but Argentina (or BA in this case) seems like a pretty depressing place given the ending of Epitafios (which I thought was excellent btw, you'd never see a USA based show end such a way with Laura dying, not to mention all the mutiliation and gore by Bruno).

As a former Architecture student I was really impressed with the landscape (lots of tree-lined streets) and buildings of BA, does anyone know what parts of the city they filmed (outside Recoleta for the cemetary).

I wanna visit BA in '07, anyone have advice on places to go as well as what parts of the city I should avoid (ie. Crime)?

reply

Why the hell would you want to go to Argentina now?

reply

why not? Doesn't seem like they're rioting in the streets anymore, and the US Dollar supposedly goes very far down there (unlike in Europe where the dollar is very weak and going to London or Paris costs a kings ransom).

At lest it is cheap to go to America.

I was wondering where this was filmed as well. I did not study architecture, but the houses and landscape (tree-lined streets) reminded me so much of New Orleans. You could probably explain why better than I could. I would also love to visit BA.

Don't you think the whole wide world is just plain depressing and morbid?. Goodness knows, we have more than our share here in the US, where just about anything ugly can happen, and it usually does. So why would you think that Argentina has cornered the market on depressing and morbid stuff?. It's just an entertainment, giving the audience what it wants, a lot of dark, violent stuff sprinkled with some sex here and there. Personally, everything I've seen of the country from this and other films, makes me want to visit - it's a very European-like place, and I find its culture, cities and people most interesting.

It's filmed alll over Buenos Aires, which is an architecturally spectacular city with lots of greenery. Some immediately recognizable places are Plaza San Martin across the street from the Plaza Hotel, the Retiro train station (which is in the vicinity), and the Puerto Madero docks. For anyone visiting Buenos Aires, these would all be places you'd get to see right away as they're centrally located and near the main visitor attractions.

I was lucky enough to vacation in Buenos Aires for two weeks last year, with a 3-day side trip to Iguazu Falls. I wish I could have stayed two years. It's a lovely city filled with gracious people, and I yearn to go back and visit again, as well as see more of that beautiful country.

Buenos Aires is a classical European city, with great style and a mixture of France and Italy.
Generally, the people think about "unified way", without knowledge about Latin American cities and countries.

Argentina, (specially Buenos Aires)is a synthesis is by the best European style. Is it possible to know something about a city or a country,
through a mini-series or film? Of course, not!

All the city deserves to be visited. It is very large, with an extension of 12 miles long. It is possible to buy a book at 3:00 AM (yes!)
or to go to dine exquisite meat at any time. "Any time" is just that: 24 hours a day.

Buenos Aires has over 100 theaters, 100 museums, 300 cinemas, hundreds of "Cafe-Concert", night-club. If you like Architecture:
Enjoy a few Le Corbusier houses and gardens.

And: Of course it is not depressed and/or morbid. It's a movie man!

Two millions visitors from Jan/Oct 2006.

Enjoy my city!

I am from Buenos Aires... it is an amazing city, filled with tourism and I haven't met a sinlge person who didn't enjoy their stay here.
Epitafios is a strong show that is looking to create an impact on viewers in all of Latin America, the language spoken is neutral for all countries, even though it is a known fact that it was filmed here with argentinian actors.
This show in no way reflects the mood, the people or the situations one can live in this city.
And Argentina also has a variety of tourist spots besides Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls and Quebrada de Humauaca on the north and Glaciar Perito Moreno on the south just to name a couple of them.
So you'll need to be a little more open minded and don't base your opinion on a whole country just on a THRILLER, that is of course going to portray its location as creepy to contribute with the mood of the show.
