Anybody ever been to Warm Springs?

I went to Warm Springs a few years ago on a field trip to see the historical site. It was a really nice place. There were little plaques everywhere, and flowers... has anybody else been there as well?

I am disabled. I used to go there when I was a boy. I even had surgery there once.

The Warm Springs Foundation, as it was called then, was considerably more elaborate than at the time the film takes place, of course, but the scenery outside was much the same. I remember a patio on which I was wheeled out when I was recovering from surgery. There was a brick wall with relief carvings of FDR and Helen Keller. I have no idea if that wall still stands, or whether it was demolished.

The rehab center has grown considerably from the early 1960's, when I used to go there. When I returned in 1995, the Franklin D Roosevelt Rehabilitation Institute (as it's called now) seemed like an entirely different building to me - much bigger and more high tech.

Update: The relief carving of FDR is still there, and you can see what Warm Springs looks like now on this video:

Hi!

I was selected to be the piano player in the ballroom scene of the movie. It was honor to be in such a wonderful film. I am so proud of all of the Emmy awards that the film won.

After "Warm Springs", the movie came out on HBO,
I drove down to Warm Springs, GA, the town.
I had never been before, but always wanted to go.
I was very impressed with FDR's Little White House,
the original pools, and the rehab center campus.
I think everybody should pay Warm Springs a visit.

Sincerely,

Danny, I'm so impressed they hired a local boy to play in the movie! That's great!

I haven't seen the movie because we don't get HBO. But I've been going down to Warm Springs since the early 70s when we first moved to Georgia. The whole area is a special place. My family and I used to picnic on Pine Mountain near where FDR had his barbecues. There's even a historical market there.

I've heard that they recently expanded the LWH museum so I can't wait to go back and see it again.

I just watched the movie last night and was amazed. I've been going to Warm Springs at least once a year for the past 11 years with the Georgia Jaycees (Camp Dream, at the back of the Institute) but it just did not actually sink in about what was actually achieved there. Just knowing the history or the present of the Institute does not give justice to the trials everyone went through to get this place legitimized and off the ground.

I visited Warm Springs as a boy growing up in Columbus, Georgia. I remember touring the Little White House and FDR's hand-operated car the most; the pools that I saw were somewhat dreary looking. After seeing the movie, I plan to visit again soon.

I have been also this year as well as last. We toured the Little White House and the heated pools. It seems a shame that these pools are now empty and somewhat a waste-I asked why they were empty and they said it was easier to preserve a national landmark that way. You can go down and touch a small fountain of the heated water and you do feel you share a bit of history. There are nice shops, an old hotel and bed and breakfasts to stay at. Of course I guess for the sense of respect there is no mention that Roosevelt had not only the painter of his last portrait there at the Little White House at the time of his death but also Lucy Mercer Rutherford, his mistress. Granted Mrs. Roosevelt did visit Warm Springs, occasionally, it seemed to be more of Franklin's oasis than hers, (can't imagine why...hmmm). I would recommend a visit if you are a Roosevelt buff as I have become. There is the wonderful FDR National Park to hike and drive through and even rent a cabin, a nearby wildlife park and Callaway Gardens, which has a neat laser show at Christmas. Great movie BTW!

Wow, more Columbus folks here than I expected. I lived in Columbus for 27 years before moving to Stone Mountain, GA. One time, my grandmother came to visit us in Columbus and was horrified that at the time I'd never been to "The Little White House" or to the Warm Springs Foundation. We drove up that Saturday to tour the house and sites around Warm Springs. This was @ 1973 and at the time the vintage pools were not accessible by the public. I have been to the hospital since then to visit patients but still haven't seen the vintage pools, perhaps next time I go down there. I have been back to the Little White House a couple of times as it's still fascinating.
Definitely worth a visit, especially if you included FDR State Park and Callaway Gardens, all in the Pine Mountain area and easily doable in a weekend.
