Don't listen to the haters

This movie is a reminder that HBO is still the big kahuna of tv entertainment. Beautiful cinematography. Great cast. Smart story-telling. Too bad it didn't get a theatrical release; this is far more than a tv movie.

I have to agree with you. I think imdb posters have been overly critical of this movie. I'm not saying that it's a masterpiece, but it is well done. I think Kidman and Owen are sexy together!

This is a television movie although a big budget one but some of it was laughable.

It's that man again!!

Grabbed this movie after discovering Gellhorn's writings in Travels With Myself And Another. (There is even an episode in the film lifted directly from one of those essays and brought pleasant shocks of recognition.) I knew from years ago she at one time had been Mrs. Ernest Hemingway, but her essays and war correspondence stunned me. A superb underappreciated writer whose other works I began ordering post haste.

Kidman I gained new respect for from her portrayal of Gellhorn, and altho' Owen was over-the-top at times in his interpretation, I was relieved he didn't turn "Papa" into a complete caricature. Have to say the scene where Molly "Pauline" Parker confronts Ernest about his affair with Martha on his return to Key West was almost too excruciating to watch; she just can't act.

Glad to see some of America's rich literary heritage in the 20th century (Gellhorn, Dos Passos, Hemingway, Perkins) is being celebrated in films and not swept aside in the flood of comic book reboots, zombie flicks and dysfunctional comedies (altho' the producers did spice up Papa & Marty's lovelife in true Hollywood fashion). One thing for sure: I'll be reading more Gellhorn and less Hemingway!

I'm actually very surprised this got so much hate when I went on the boards. Yeah, it can be cheesy, suffer from budget constrictions, and use some proper editing, but I actually really enjoyed this film. Plus it taught me more about two American writers that I was never really that familiar with, even Hemingway (long before my time). So at the very least it's a decent medium to introduce viewers to classic American literature.
