This was terrible.

I was so excited for this movie, and so let down.

I challenge you to watch the last scene without smirking, smiling or simply laughing. This is either terrible or the funniest movie of the year!

reply

There was a lot that was good, but that last scene was awful.

Well, I gave it the half hour test. If I'm not the least interested after 1/2 hour, if figure....life's too short. Not saying "terrible" but pretty boring.

That last scene wasn't good, but the whole movie was not terrible. They should have ended the last scene after she said "Turn if off, we're through." but the rest of the film was pretty good.

reply

The last scene was also false.
In reality, this was about the time she commited suicide.

I agree - we couldn't continue watching after about 45 minutes. It was nothing but one cliche after another. Once in a while we would check back to see if it got any better, but ended up even more disappointed. How could so much talent blow it so badly?? Has to be the director. Noble attempt but a big misfire. Diane Baker was wonderful, though.

It was crap.

I try and try not to make negative posts but I was so let down by this movie, I must agree. Risible. I am not really a Kidman hater ( but I don't really consider her good either) but in this movie she just seems like such a lightweight. A ridiculous choice to portray someone of Gellhorn's historical stature. And it must have been hard for them to make Clive Owen seem silly but they did and at first I thought, Maybe they're just trying to make Hemingway seem silly. And if that's the case, they succeeded. No doubt he had his faults but he was a complicated man and not a buffoon at all times. And some of us still think he was a great writer though I see how opinions can vary about that. Anyhow, poor Clive Owen. What a one- note mess.

Terrible job, unworthy of its subjects, unworthy of the times they attempted to portray, and unworthy of anyone's time. The only bright spot was seeing "Mocha Joe", from Curb Your Enthusiasm, as Hemingway's head hanger- on. I got a few laughs out of that.

I really love Hemingway and I want to be a writer myself, but this film was disappointing, I would have loved a Hemingway HBO film of the same quality as Mildred Pierce was last year, I don't think it was a waste of time though, just not great or anywhere near what it could have been. I would give it a 7/10

I agree with every word you posted. Utterly impossible. Overacting all the way around, except for Kidman's face (as you pointed out).
Hemingway has more charisma dead than Clive Owen has in this movie.
The only good thing about it was the fantastic aging makeup for Kidman. Otherwise, totally bleh.

As soon as I saw the "russian bad guy", I turned it off.
