Rob Brydon vs Steve Coogan

I just read the New Yorker profile of Steve Coogan, that is why I rented the DVD. I had never heard of Rob Brydon, but he no question he's got the best lines in this movie. Is this a fluke, or is Rob Brydon funnier than Steve Coogan?

if you're still interested :o) - Rob Brydon is pretty well known on British TV, but nowhere near as much so as Coogan. Coogan is funnier IMHO but his style of humour is very British - possibly it doesn't work so well for Americans?

Also, a lot of Brydon's lines in the film - like the rest of the film-set scenes - are all about poking fun at Coogan's real-life public image (the shagging around, the overinflated ego), so you couldn't really imagine this film with Brydon but without Coogan IYSWIM.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was thinking of the commentary track they did. Rob Brydon seemed to have an edge in the off-the-cuff stuff. But who knows, maybe he just had a good day. I have since seen Supernova and can't get very excited about it. I had heard that Steve Coogan was brilliant in his appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm, but also heard he spent hours and hours getting the lines right; maybe he is not an off-the-cuff type. I thought he was the best thing in Night at the Museum and also enjoyed his brief bit in Hot Fuzz. The part that confuses me is that can be appealing or a little revolting or both, but he is usually funny.

Nice to hear from someone across the pond.

No Brydon is the funniest! you only need to watch him in Gavin and Stacey (youtube it) he's hilarious, whereas Coogan is only as the roles he is given, Brydon just has this natural humour to him.

Alan Partridge (Coogan) is waaaaay funnier than Gavin and Stacey.

If you want to start that game I'll see your "Alan partridge" (wriiten the genius that is Armando Ianucci) raise you the bleak pathos of "Marrion and Geoff".

That sums up my growing appeal for Coogan perfectly.

Rob Brydon anytime here...
On the contrary, I loathe Coogan and hate to see him jumping on screen on every film he (and producers/directors) decides to "grace" us with - complete narcissism disguised as acting, one of the worse guys in the market these days. Even Stallone, by his lack of emotional acting range, is way more bearable than Coogan's histrionics... After Cock and a Bull's I'll completely veto all his movies - unless Meryl decides to be in the credits...

I also go for Brydon. I've had a little crush on him from the moment I saw his one line in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. I even watched that astronomy sitcom just to see him.

I think they're both hilarious but they have very different styles. I think it's interesting that despite this they work so well with each other. The original poster mentioned that Rob seems a lot more off the cuff and naturally funny and I agree. I think Steve is the type of comedian who sees comedy as very serious business, he's the type to agonise over the way a line is delivered whereas I think Rob just has natural funny bones and doesn't take it so seriously.

I love children. I’m not a paedophile obviously; I just think they’re great.

Steve Coogan is apparently a real creep in public but I find his work unquestioningly hilarious and touching. There's a bit of vulnerability even in his most obnoxious characters, and maybe that's why it's so easy to laugh.

Rob Brydon - and "Gavin and Stacey" are remarkably unfunny to me (sorry, Ruth Jones, I think you're great but that show - urgh!)

I really like both a lot but i wouldn't call myself a huge Steve Coogan fan. However i am a huge Rob Brydon fan. He's so amazing. Hilarious. One of my favourite comedians and he seems like a really great guy too. :)
