CGI or real backgrounds...

Just saw parts of this film; whereas, the characters and primary action are clearly CGI, I'm under the impression that the backgrounds (water, waves, sometimes the surf boards) were live(real) footage, often enhanced by CGI. Anyone know whether this is true or not?

When I watched the movie for the first time I was absolutely sure that the waves and the backgrounds are real footage... but in reality the whole movie is 100% hand-made CGI. It's unbelievable how a small studio managed to reach such a high quality of animation.

yeah, it was amazing, i've always been a fan of surf shots and they got it just perfect. In the credits there's a part that says something about the "pipeline" engine or something like that, responsible for the 3d

In the special features their is a part about it being all computer animated. It is so amazing though

Lots of people got fooled by the amazing CGI backgrounds on this movie. Perhaps the fact that it was "shot" as a documentary reinforced the idea on what you were watching was real not fully digital. Wonderful animation.
