After the hude success of 'The March of the penguins', I could tell that this was just to try to copy off the very successful movie for the money. The movie looked dumb from the trailers. I hope most of you agree with me?
I agree, to a point. I didn't the film was all that bad, but it certainly could have used some work. Even before I saw the film I said, 'why are they making this?' because it doesn't have to be a penguin movie. None of the humour is derived from them being penguins, and the whole of the reason they're penguins is for purely aesthetic value. The storyline, while good, needed a little bit of work. And, everyone here seems so impressed that it was a fake documentary, but I wasn't. It's not groundbreaking. It's not new. It got kind of annoying, at times, for me. IMHO, if you want to make a good penguin movie, make a movie about penguins WHO ARE PENGUINS, and not surfing, catch-phrase spouting "cool" extreme sports penguins.
I rather liked this movie and felt that it was unique in its point of view. The original poster is trashing a film he hasn't even seen which is not at all reasonable. However, concerning the current penguin popularity comment. I felt that penguins were always popular creatures and recall seeing plenty of television and movies concerning them, such as Pingu and the Penguin and Pebble. If you tend to get tired of a certain creatures popularity then why not stop watching dog and cat movies.
I dislike the movie, but i don´t care if it failed or not. the truth is, there are better pinguin movies, and a lot better animated movies than this one. But because Mc.Donald is giving toys about it, it´s a success in my country.
Out of curiosity, what animal would you have picked?
It has to be bipedal for the surfing to work and be at home on land and in water. I know there was a chicken, but humour was derived from that.
Also, in what way was it not a spoof documentary? It looked like one to me. I cannot think of any other children's films that are spoof documentarys (I would like to be corrected on this though). To me it seemed very clever. It freed them up to explore the thoughts of the characters and their back story without flash-backs or narrated thoughts, but still in a way that is familiar and understandable to children.
Tragically, when you have kids, you start to pay interest in what they watch and what you want them to watch. Which is why lots of people were upset with Happy Feet, as it promised one thing (cute little tap dancing penguin on all the adverts that you kid wants to watch) and delivered something else entirely (very adult themes like sex, fascism, discrimination & the environment to name a few, that confuse small kids).
Ultimately this movie isn`t aimed at you. That you don`t like it is irrelevant. I can see the film industry aiming more films at the audience who find the cinema a magical experience and don`t know how to download films off the internet. Hmmm, that actually includes my parents too. Expect "Casablanca 2" some time soon...
"(very adult themes like sex, fascism, discrimination & the environment to name a few, that confuse small kids)."
I realize that many people consider mentions of sex adult themes, but discrimination, fascism and the environment? Those seem like things that ought to be addressed early in life.
Actually, quite a bit of the humor is based around the fact that they are penguins. Simply the fact that cold-water birds are enjoying a warm-water sport sets a more humorous premise than almost any other species of bird could have presented, ostriches included. Well, kiwis might have worked, just because they, like penguins, are innately funny just standing there, although then there wouldn't have been an excuse to have a surfboard made entirely of ice. Most of the movie up until the point where they head off to Pen Gu Island is based around the fact that they're penguins. Yeah, once the actual surfing begins, the fact that they're penguins ceases to be a major element in the movie, but it would definitely have been a different movie without the penguin angle.
Grunt, oh....wait....let me read that again...what's the title of the movie...."Penguins in the Wild"....."The Real Life of Penguins" ?......NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Huge shock! The movie is called "SURF's Up"..... it's a movie about SURFING. the movie makers never pretended that it was a movie about penguins.... it's about surfing!
I thought the idea was so successful! if you thought it was annoying, fine, but think so for the right reason, for heaven's sake!
Well, it's true that there has been a bit of a run of penguin movies as of late. Comparing it to March of the Penguins, a documentary, seems false though. I will say that it is worlds better than Happy Feet which struck me as dumb and a bit lacking in soul.
Don't agree. I think of this as more of a surf movie than a penguin movie. I like the penguins portraying the surfers. Best animal/bird I can think of to represent surfing.
Happy Feet blew. Course that's just my opinion.
I didn't even think about March of the Penguins when I was watching this. Although I liked that one.
Wow, its truly sad that your happiness is based on whether or not an animated movie fails or succeeds. And whats even sadder is that you need validation from IMDB of all places. Poor thing.
Well, my response wasn't too sad that you responded to me. Did I offend you? Were you too hoping the movie failed? I could have sworn I was responding to the OP. Whatever floats your boat sweetie. LOL, this is IMDB, so I should expect that.
"The film took in a respectable $5.8 M on its opening day, though it did open at number 4 at the box office. After one weekend, the film grossed $17,640,249. As of November 30, 2007, the film has grossed $58,867,694 domestically and $82,152,010 in the remaining markets, bringing the worldwide gross to $141,019,704."
If that's a failure...wow. Spread your wealth pal!
I guess that depends on the relative definition of crap. I don't think Shrek 3 was utter crap either, but I would argue that it was not as good as the first two in its series.
Most people who don't like Surf's Up either hate "penguin movies" for some reason, hate one of the voice actors for some reason, or are far too sensitive to a rude joke now and then. Or they ask "why" too much. It's a movie. Entertainment. If it didn't entertain you, well cool. Shrek 3 didn't really entertain me either, but that's not enough for me to call it utter crap. I can take some bits out of it that made me enjoy it for a little while. Were there no parts of Surf's Up that you liked? None?
Not to worry though, I have a feeling Surf's Up won't get a trilogy, much less a sequel.
I don't know what constitutes "failed" but overall this movie has done very well. Almost it's entire budget made back in sales, DVD sales, Cable rentals, And of course the big money maker TV RENTALS.
So no it's hardly a failure.
I liked the movie better than March.

What does it have to do with March of the Penguins? Did you see the movie at all? Maybe you shouldn't trust trailers. Trailers are just commercials, dude. The point is *always* to make movies look like something else that stupid viewers might have liked/seen/heard of.
What I don't get is why you need people to agree with you. Does that make you feel safer?
