HOLLYWOOD REMAKE

Hmmm...I think a Sigaw remake should be produced!

reply

I surely agree! The Echo (Sigaw) should be remade by Hollywood! I also suggest to any potential producers to acquire the services of the original director for the remake. He is such a gifted filmmaker!

reply

i would like too but i wouldnt coz knowing hollywood they will make it more hollywood like trying to make the viewers jump every minute

reply

i think new line cinema bought the rights... rest assured it will be remade into a hollywood movie.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

reply

Damn... another remake :(

I mean.. it ok to remake once in a while, but lately hollywood is remaking 9 out of 10 movies!

So... where's creativity?

reply

On the other side of the world.

Stephen Susco and Yam Laranas are now writing the script

Over 100000 IMDb users says that "popeinnocentyears" is a jackass....

they are already starting the pre production of the remake by hollywood, after sigaw won the 2006 brussels intl. filmfest, the top filmfest for horror, sci-fi, fantasy, suspense and thrillers.

I was about to reply to the comment that this is the "first" Philippine Horror movie. I disagree. There are a lot of very good Filipino psychological movies in the '70s which have not been restored. I guess they don't conform to the Asian horror wave and this is why they are not given attention.

reply

You're right. There's this "ITIM" a.k.a. "THE RITES OF MAY" by Mike de Leon which got awards in 1976 Asian Film Festival in Sydney, Australia. This is also considered as the BEST FILIPINO HORROR FILM. I totally agree

Well, another film, "PATAYIN MO SA SINDAK SI BARBARA" a.k.a. "KILL BARBARA BY TERROR" (no, not the Chito Roño megger which starred Lorna Tolentino and Dawn Zulueta in 1995! I'm talking about the original "Patayin...") by Celso Ad Castillo in 1974 which starred Susan Roces. This film was screened in Cannes Film Festival during its time.

"SIGAW" a.k.a. "THE ECHO" almost succeeds but it was SOOOOO influenced by J-horror!!

Currently, I am hoping that "ANG KAPITBAHAY" a.k.a. "THE WANTING", another horror flick by Yam Laranas will be much better. :)

reply

And the "Gabi ng Lagim" movie from the 70s/80s, based on the radio show, was also scary.

Philippine horror in the 80's and earlier was really scary. It took a nosedive in the 90's til the present, with a few exceptions such as "Sigaw" and recently "Pamahiin." Let's hope these mark something positive towards a return to greatness for Filipino horror.

yehey! i just read in an article by nestor torres in national inquirer that the movie will have a holloywood remake, and will be directed by Yam Laranas himself. it will be produced by the studio that was behind the hollywood remake of "the ring" i hope they'll give as much exposure as the ring had before so that it'll open doors to more Filipino horror movies or other genre.

reply

I hope they won't mess up the original story much. An ex-con? Interesting, but, I'm gonna wait and see. I really love the original.

reply

Interesting as it sounds, but the original is a rip-off of numerous J-horror movies (Ringu, Whispering Corridors, The Grudge). Both dramatic and narrative techniques are reminiscent of such genre classics from Japan. As a film critic, I am not impressed with the film. Does that say something for the remake?

reply

I kind of agree with you. I watched the film with my sister's and we sort of kept saying the names of other horror films it reminded us of. I think it's a good movie, though. Most filipino horror that I have seen so far have been more humorous than scary. But there was one movie which scared the heck out of me. It was Mananangal in Manilla.

reply

as a critic maybe you should take the time to read interviews with the director who doesnt shy away from talking about what movies he did and did not see before making his film and what he was influenced and not influenced by...

reply

Hehehe...I was hoping na magkakaroon ng VCD's ng ITIM, and PATAYIN SA SINDAK SI BARBARA. I also remember being freaked out with the HALIMAW SA BANGA, and whenever I see the big jar in our living room, it just gives me shivers.

I just don't want to spoil, but I think I'm getting an idea on the remake's plot. Hehehe. Hope I'm right.

From Sci-Fi Wire 06/12/2007:

Jesse Bradford has signed to star in "The Echo", a remake of the acclaimed Filipino supernatural thriller "Sigaw", according to The Hollywood Reporter. Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are producing.

Yam Laranas, who co-wrote and directed "Sigaw", is directing the remake, which is also being produced by Shin Shimosawa, Tyler Mitchell and Will Wright.

The story centers on a young ex-con (Bradford) who moves into an old apartment building only to learn his neighbor is an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a curse. Eric Bernt wrote the screenplay.

Shooting is scheduled to begin mid-August in Toronto.
