Based On True Events?

I've heard a lot of people saying this is based off true events; pretty messed up if you ask me. The trailer sure as hell seems more than intriguing. The one scene that got me, was when the character of Sam states "...well a long time ago, this man lived there." then the figure lurches by the open doorway. Seems very stylishly directed, the acting seems pretty decent for a lower budgeted film, and if nothing else, it has the "Based On True Events" angle going for it.

Does anyone know the actual facts though? I can't believe someone would be that screwed in the head to do this; then again, "Wolf Creek" was based on true events too... so I suppose anything's possible. It's just sick to think about though. I heard this was going to Tribeca, and possibly Cannes? Well, best wishes to the filmmakers; I hope to see this one on the big screen soon enough.

I just saw it over the weekend at the Tribeca Film Fest and it was amazing!!!! The core of the film is based on a legend that the director grew up with. It's Wolf Creek and then some!!!!

I saw it too. It was a good movie except for the fact that a big black guy and three other people couldn't seem to fight off the brother and sister. It was only a skinny girl and a pretty boy with a little muscle! Franklin punched Jesse once and then ran like a little b*tch.

I could see them being scared and maybe stunned for awhile that Sam turned on them, but running away like chickens and leaving Dominik to die was pretty weak. Just because the siblings were trained to be survivalists or something doesn't mean they couldn't be beaten.

Melanie I could see being killed because she was pretty stupid and useless. It was nice to see Kate finally fight back at the end. At least she didn't get killed. That would have made the whole movie pointless.

Otherwise, the movie had nice tension and the acting was decent. Fay Masterson was creepy! I wonder who was that shadow at the end? It's hard to believe it was Sam, because Kate drove for awhile and there's no way she could have run that fast (even though she was supposedly a fast runner). It could have been Jesse, because we didn't actually see him die, only fall down. I'm pretty sure the father died.

Deaths for those interested:

- Sam body slams Dominik onto the floor and stabs him multiple times in the chest maybe, but it's off-screen.
- Jesse throws a big knife into Franklin's back and then comes up behind him and wrenches it around, then pokes it through his body so that it protrudes out the front.
- Sam stabs Melanie several times off-screen.
- Jesse's father stakes him in the gut and he falls down, but we don't really see him die.
- Sam stakes her father a couple times while he's pinned on the ground.
- Sam chases Kate onto a dock and Kate grabs a sharp pole and knocks Sam into the water. We see her sink into the lake with blood around her, but it's unclear as to what wounds Sam has.

On the movie's Wikipedia page, the guy who wrote and directed it says the family massacre backstory was the true events part of the movie.

You have to be careful about that stuff. Folks like to say something is based on true events. Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre which really never happened. Like many films Psycho etc. were influenced by the story of Ed Gein
