Sam's Lake Update

I'm the film's music supervisor. We're in the process of finishing post.

The film will be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC on April 28th & 29th and May 2nd, 5th and 6th. The producers are also planning to go to Cannes as well.

I have just seen the first screening of this movie and its possibly the worst movie I have ever seen, it did not offend me, scare, me, shock me, amuse me or even keep me awake. Please dont waste $12 and if you have already paid dont waste 90 mins of your time. Now I'm a fan of horror movies, even bad horror movies but this made the house of wax look like the Shining...My suggestion to improve the movie would be to have some semblance of a plot and maybe even the tiniest degree of an explanation for the bad guys motivation. Oh and captain caveman running round a forest is bordering on comical but not quite bordering close enough....

i was the kid in the back... laughing the whole time. i felt really bad about that but i couldn't help it. hehe.

the ninja fight at the end was by far the best scene in cinematic history. loved it. hahaha.

i was also sad to see no one had any questions...

two i was going to ask were

where did Jesse's shirt suddenly vanish to all of a sudden after Dominik read the journal? haha. it was so funny. he looked like a model or something. nice pecs and 12-pack though, hehe.

what the hell was with the change from night to day/morning in like a snap? What the?

i definitely don't think this film will be picked up by the looks of it...

i just couldn't stop laughing and making fun of it after...

I just got back from its second screening... and I have to agree with the, well 2 reviews. Somehow my friend and I ended up sitting behind some of the actors, and I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all... the actor who played Dominic shot around and gave us a glare at one point but, whatever. It's a pretty laughable movie and I thought it was amusing that the director compared his style to M. Night Shamaylan's.

L'Enfer, c'est Les Autres.

I was sitting in the back at the same screening...What a piece of *beep* can't believe how bad it was...I had hoped for some sort of professionalism being that it was Tribeca's fest but this convinced me that if you pay enough you can have a spot...I'm a film student and before the movie I was stoked about the director and cast talking afterwards but as soon as those credits rolled my girlfriend and I took off...

What the *beep* was this guy thinking with some of those moments?...The shirtless model chasing them through the woods?...The banter between the brother and sister?...THE *beep* DAD?...The sister and the dad and the brother chasing eachother instead of chasing Kate...Why are we watching this?...I feel bad for Sandrine Holt...She's an attractive woman and a decent actress from what I've seen, but this movie isn't going to be the one that helps her make that leap from American TV to Hollywood...

Not sure what theater you guys were in but I LOVED the film - WAKE UP, storyline!! If you listened to the director it was based on true events. I haven't been that freaked out in a while. For a first film I take my hat off to the the film makers, GREAT JOB, scared the *beep* out of me.

You're right - these other reviewers must be on crack. This was one of the best suspense films I've seen in quite a while and I see a LOT of horror films/am pretty discerning about them. See my full review on this page. I really hope this gets the distribution it deserves. Nice work!

Just read your err.. uhm... review? Your review is quite flawed in a few areas. And your the one asking if the others ever watch horror movies...

About the only quality to your review is that somebody could read it and still not have a clue about just about anything that actually happens in the movie.

But hey.. thanks for coming out, we appreciated the effort!

Saw the movie last night. It was pretty weak. Too formulaic for my tastes (a weak Scream-type plot with twist). In my opinion, there was nothing that stood out about this movie. I don't know how someone could give it an 8 rating. I too was surprised that this film was chosen for the Tribeca film fest. Oh well. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, though.

reply

I'm well versed in horror movies and this was easily one of the worst excuses for one...The writing in this was absolutely terrible...Sorry, but the last 15 minutes of this movie were well below that of a cheesey 80's slasher film....I'm sorry for your bad taste.

reply

Really? I have this thing about not saying what happens in a movie...It's just a thing I avoid giving, which is spoilers...Weird, I know...It wasn't a review as much as it was me ranting about what a piece of *beep* it was...

reply

could you tell me what your colon looks like?...seeing as your head is up your ass...
I'm not trying to say this movie is in the same category as "the shining" but really if you stop taking pills maybe you'll stay awake long enough to realize your head is up your ass...
I enjoyed the movie...personally I found it to be a nice change from the norm...it was nice to see a possibly realistic movie in this genre for a change. I wasn't expecting to see a movie that would keep me up at night as not many do..I can't recall the last time I have seen a truly scary movie...though I will tell you if I am at my cottage and the lights go out..I will be remembering some of the scenes...just as "Blair Witch" did to me...though not afraid, there is a stillness in the night that gives flashbacks of these movies. I would dare to say either you have a personal issue with someone on the crew of this film or you will never in your life ever be able to quit your job and be a critic...I have a tendency to look objectively at what I am watching, regardless of who is in it or what the movie is about..
Long story short..your comment just shows that you are unintellegent and obviously have issues with someone in the movie...to make such a negative comment is more than I need to pick yours out of the bunch and just for the record...I would bet $50,000 that someone named Ruth Roberts wasn't the person who wrote that comment...grow up..if you want to criticise step up and have something to back your comments up...you're sad....

Ok, the one thing that I absolutely detest about message boards is that if someone's opinion differs from your own, that person is immediately "on crack," "stupid," or "doesn't understand cinema." Well guess what - people have the ability to be totally competent and still dislike a movie.
I wasn't entertained by the movie, it was extremely repetitive, it wasn't suspenseful, and when the action finally started it was pretty uninspired. It didn't really explain much of what was going on and their strange concept of the sleep. The acting was pretty bland, and I thought the characters weren't well-developed - just your stereotypical characters: the gay guy, the hot native of the town, the shy girl who doesn't know how beautiful/special she is, the "just there to get killed" couple... nothing new.
It didn't have an incredible twist, and it wasn't really new in its genre - a slasher film, at best.
I'm a big horror movie fan, and most movies don't scare me, but I can at least appreciate it for its artistic or entertaining value - this one, for me, lacked both of those things.

L'Enfer, c'est Les Autres.

So if someone thought this movie was bad then they must have a personal vendetta against someone involbed with the film? That's completely ridiculous, baseless and ignorant. I guess it's fair to say you're sleeping with someone involved with the film? I mean, you liked it, so it must be true.

reply

I'd really like to know when it's coming to theaters or atleast getting released on dvd. I have been waiting for almost 2 years now. It not only was filmed in my home town of Nanaimo BC, but it was also filmed at my work.

So if anyone has any info i'd really appreciate it. Oh and a little tid-bit the main cabin in the movie is on the market for approx. a million dollars now.

If you notice alot of the people who loved the movie, have only posted about this movie. So they are likely friends of relative of those involved in the movie.

so where can I get a copy of this movie??

I don't know anybody in it, but it kept me entertained. I like these kind of movies. I like the atmosphere of a small creepy town or isolated place where the friends head up and meet up with local legends. It's like 10,000 Maniacs, Devil's Rejects, Hoboken Hollow, etc.... Cool movie.

reply

I liked it, too. It wasn't what I was expecting. I mean, yeah, it was a slasher film and the ending was the same old, same old but it wasn't based on the supernatural and it was theoretically plausible even.

I thought the acting was solid, too. All and all, I was happy.

reply

It was NOTHING like the movies you mentioned. It's way too dull and lacking any of the charm those movies.

reply

Heh, you hafta appreciate the pure passion in your comment; I loved it! YES, it's true that in many, Many, MANY cases on these boards and in the reviews themselves you DO usually have a high percentage of obvious, OBVIOUS plants by people who are clearly involved with the film in some way.

BUT...

Be that as it may, I also find just as equally a LOT of haters like many who have posted here on this thread can be just as mindless and unpleasant. And I THINK I can see by your genuinely heated response that you are getting fed up with it! I don't blame you.

NOW...

as to the film I just NOW got done watching it and I truly felt that it was decently written, directed, and acted. Did I feel like 'OMG!!! I hafta change my pants!!!' No... But, I honestly feel that compared to the VOLUMINOUS CRAP out there that is called 'Horror' these days and the mostly PUTRID acting that is done in them, by comparison and even on it's own merits, I felt that it was well done and very competently put together and I personally felt that the acting was most refreshing in the naturalness and low key manner of their performances. I DIDN'T feel that this was just another CRAP Horror film cranked out mindlessly for the money; I felt that the effort behind it was fully genuine and I did like the film. It was simple and straight forward (although with a good twist) The direction wasn't anything really wildly outstanding or stylish in any particular way, but everything in it was done decently...

ILOVEtrading films!I've got a HUGE..uh..collection!Please ask!
