Effects or defects? Someone help explain?

I thought the movie was... interesting. Some parts a little too artsy. I'm not really here to debate the movie but, to ask about the warning in the beginning. What are the EXACTLY talking about pertaining the "intended effects"? I'm not sure if they're talking about the blockey distorted appearance of a scratched DVD or if its just the one I'm watching. After a few minutes it gave me a little headache. I thought that that was what they were warning about until towards the end when the guy in crawling bugs says, "what was I thinking?" then the movie was "normal". I had rented the movie from Blockbuster and it was brand new and undamaged.

My copy came from Blockbuster, however I didn't notice any grainy distortions.

Spoilers start here:

I wondered about that disclaimer as well. In the Crawling Bugs segment the only thing that looked Really fake was the little "safe place" with the fake trees and flowers. I got the fact that it was supposed to look fake.

In "Catepillar" the "Aide" was underneath the floor watching the husband's torture through a watery peephole. I thought he was the husband trapped in his own mind. I can't say I noticed any "defects".

Greetings,
Need I say more? You are remembered.

There were some skipping juddery effects in the first soundless bit, and you could've thought it was your player or the disc jumping, I suppose.

Interesting film, I agree. It was very overly blessed with arty frown-inducing moments, it's true, but it was visually impressive and enjoyable weird. Transgressive and fun!

Oops kinda late on the response here, but I believe that warning was only pertaining to the first story, "Mars Canal." It starts off without sound - they just didn't want you to think it was a defect.

Right. Also, there are what appear to be editing glitches, as on an old videotape, from time to time.

i only got through mirror hell. this film was not my cup of tea at all. i thought mirror hell, was staid, unconvincing, poorly acted and had too much exposition at the end.
