Dysfunction

(probable spoilers below)

Male sexual and relationship dysfunction produces movies like "The 40-year old Virgin". Female sexual and relationship dysfunction creates movies like this in which the IMDb rating is a lowsy 5.8.

Why is it funnier and more acceptable to laugh when men are screwed up? Is the relative indifference to this movie a result of it's striking a nerve with a huge segment of the population? What was it they said; 30 million women? Sounds like une grande probleme.

This movie definitely has a tinge of sadness to it, but for some reason laughing at a woman overcoming her difficulty having an orgasm with a man doesn't seem right.

True, yes.

Although, I think your comparisons are slightly lacking. I mean, the point of the 40 year old virgin was that this guy was so nervous around women, that he had never been able to approach one for a date, never mind have intercourse with one. It wasn't called the 40 year old premature ejaculator, or the 40 year old erectile dysfunctional or the 40 year old who was unable to ejaculate.
Plus, he never experiments with men, as she does with women.

The main character in this film has had sex, or made love, whatever you want to call it, but she has never had an orgasm. This film has her sort of overcoming her problem at the beginning of the film, yet is unable to reach an orgasm when with a partner.
I agree that it doesn't seem funny, but then again it kinda doesn't focus on the fact that she cannot get an orgasm, but more on the fact that she isn't really in love with the guy she is married to.

I quite enjoyed the film, I dunno why, as I thought I would hate it and I didn't. That, and the fact that I could watch Parker Posey all day, as she was stunning in this film, really attractive, and way more interesting than Mischa Barton. I felt like shouting 'you idiot!' when her husband begins an affair with Barton's character. (Off topic, boy, has Mischa Barton's career gone nowhere. Those recent pictures of her looking emaciated are disturbing, to say the least.)

It could also have involved the husband more in the whole situation, maybe allow him to help also, but it does kinda send her out to do the work on her own. Ah well.

I'm not sure what the main character's looks have to do with it being an enjoyable film. Content over vapid-ness is important.

I agree.

My whole thing is that it is not a dysfunction. Until the 60's most women did not even know they could have an orgasm as a group,
