There's No Reason For The Backlash Against This!

I dont want to start an arguement but i see all these Anti "Ashanti Playing Dorothy" Threads and I'm Like What's Going On. The movie is done. Ashanti IS playing the part and they're not gonna refilm it so what's wrong with just accepting it. personally i Like Ashanti. I think she's a pretty good singer and was a really good actress in Coach Carter. With That Said, this is not a biased post from a enraged fan who is firing back. I'm just saying why can't we talk about the movie itself instead of consantly bringing up a Black Ashanti playing the infamous Dorothy.

No, that's not it. my comp just screws up sometimes.

Um... You forgot a comma.

Actually, you missed TWO commas. Further, it seems that an English major, especially when criticizing another's grammatical errors, would refrain from redundant expressions within the same paragraph. Or run-on sentence structure. Or sentences that don't make sense, i.e. Maybe I should believe that especially in this day and age, people are just as unaware as ever of all things grammar/spelling related.

How about just saying, "Maybe I should believe that [deleted text] in this day and age, people are just as unaware as ever of all things grammar/spelling related." or, "Maybe I should believe that especially in this day and age, people are [deleted text] unaware [deleted text] of all things grammar/spelling related."

The word 'especially' implies an unusual circumstance, while 'as ever' implies a continuation of a common condition.

I'm no English Major. By the way, what the hell does "Victorian" have to do with proper sentence structure?

oh, again, BTW, wot teh hell does grammar hAve 2 do wit posting on teh internet? and is OMG listed in Webster's? <sigh> woteva...

Are you joking big ego? English majors don't need to know the things you mention. That's what editors are for ;) English programs currently produce two versions of majors: Those that write, and those that edit.

As you can see by my post dates, I'm rarely on the DB. But it is fun to come back and see what people say about my posts. Odd thing...most people's posts that I respond to have been deleted by the poster or by the adminstrator (check out some of my other posts if you're curious, or not). In future reading, nobody has any context for my facetiousness. This can lead to some humor all its own. My post was a criticism of the grammar of a supposed English Major's post criticizing the grammar of an earlier poster...(rap your head around that sentence.) Joking, you ask? Why, I never joke. If I did, I'd be destroyed by the radioactive NUCULAR 99% that roam these boards...but every now and again I stumble across another poster that has a bit more grey matter than the average pistachio nut and my faith in the existence of that reclusive, elusive 1% is born again (in a strictly metaphorical sense.)

Yeah, I was joking.

"And how can this be? For he is the Kwisatz Haderach!"

has anyone else noticed how IMDB message boards alway turn into arguements that have little or nothing to do with the actual topic at hand. for example, this person brought up the topic of the new muppets movie. yet all tahts happened is a string of grammar corrections and a racial slur.

seriously, guys, get a grip

Its a sad day and age when people get picked apart for their grammer. Now I dont think that my grammer is the best, in fact I know it sucks, but still that is not a reason to pick a person apart.

Why is it that on these boards no one can ever seem to have a conversation? It seems like every one is yelling at each other. The orginal poster posted his/her opinion and the best you could do is make fun of their grammer? When in fact their grammer and spelling was better than half the people on these boards?

If you have a complaint about the movie post it. If you want to make fun of people for the grammer get a hobby and get over yourself.

This was the best part of this awful movie. Well, and the Dark Side of the Moon reference. And for the record, the Muppets have *always* laced jokes with adult subject matter into their bits.

To say that Ashanti shouldn't be Dorothy because she's black, isn't being racist, the character Dorothy is a young country farm girl from Kansas, which is not Ashanti. Its about being true to the characters that have made the Wizard of Oz such a timeless film. You wouldn't cast Tom Hanks, despite his acting ability, as Malcom X, come on. Come off your high horses and realize saying Ashanti shouldn't be Dorothy isn't being racist, it's simply stating that the character of Dorothy should not be changed.

reply

they made her work in a diner and filled the movie full of MUPPETS!!!!
its racist. end of story.

reply

I don't think it's racist to say that Dorothy shouldn't be played by a black woman but not necessarily true in this film. Although it's true that in the book and in the MGM 1939 classic version Dorothy is a white farm girl from kansas but this movie isn't a remake or following the oringal story. Dorothy was also just a child in both the book and movie who lived on a farm during the 19th century, but in this version she's an adult living in a trailer with her Aunt and Uncle in the present time working as a waitress in a diner with dreams of becoming a singer. So for this version her race doesn't have to necessarily be white in a more multicultural America. I'm black and I personnaly wouldn't have a problem if Dorothy was played by Jewel, Britney Spears, Mya, Leanne Rimes or Hillary Duff as long as she was good in it and I felt Ashanti was good in the part. And there's no comparison of having Tom Hanks playing Malcom X since he was a real-life person and not a fictionized character. Plus, as I stated before this isn't a remake to the MGM classic film but just another version of the story with the Muppets where they had the Muppets play several of the characters. There have been several Muppets versions of classics which the muppets play important characters and know one complains that they're not being played by real people but by muppets. Back to the movie, if they made a latest Wizard of Oz movie where it was faithful to the book regarding the time and place I agree that Dorothy character should be a white little girl and be played by a white child actress like Dakota Fanning for example. There are certain characters that should be played by a certain race, black, white, asian etc but then there's certain characters that can be played by any race or when the race can be changed depending on film or characters.

reply

racist? the scarecrow is a frog. tota is a shrimp/prawn whatever...
i bet you wouldnt complain is she was like...some swedish chick. nice blonde hair blue eyed girl. hell youd probably not even mention the accent.

reply

it is a remake! that means that characters can be different. it's not even worth arguing over, it wasnt very good. now...muppets christmas carol, thats a film worth arguing over!

It's a film. It happened. Get over it...

reply

I agree. It's ONLY a movie! I liked it, too!

Truth about me: "Timid and shy and scared am I of things beyond my ken."

reply

I don't care about Ashanti being black and playing a part that is usually done by a white girl. I barely care that they made Dorothy's hair in the original Oz movie a brunette, when she's really blonde. I actually like this movie, since they use the original silver slippers instead of the ruby ones... I don't like her in this movie, though, because she really was just inappropriate for the part, and didn't do a very good job. Her singing is very good, yes.

The reason why I don't like her in this movie is because of her acting skill for it. People not liking it because she's black, well..they're just...seriously horrible people. If they don't like it because the original Dorothy is white, then don't like it because the scarecrow's not a frog, the lion's not a bear, and the witches aren't pigs.
