The Hell??? When did this happen???

As an avid Messiah fan I'm a bit pissed off that I missed Messiah III coming out. Anyone British out there, please respond!! Was it shown on the BBC, and if so, when?

Anyone know if it's out on DVD yet??
And are Frances Grey's eyes that scary??

reply

It was on TV late last year. Trust me, you didn't miss much. Gone are all the elements that made the first Messiah and to a lesser extent the second one as brilliant as they were.

This one is really boring, with an obvious killer who has a dumb motive. Also, the sub-plot with Kate (who I didn't notice as having particularly scary eyes) is tedious.

They'll probably release it on DVD with the other two so people have to re-buy the first two to get this one.

It was shown last August bank holiday.
Although it wasn't quite as good as the first two, it wasn't bad, still better than most tv dramas. It hasn't yet been released on dvd, if they make a 4th, they'll probably release them together.
I personally didn't think Frances Grey had scary eyes, but she does have a permanantly worried look about her, you'll know why when you eventually get to see the programme.

Think it's scheduled for DVD release this Autumn, & all three series are being shown on consecutive nights on one of the cable channels ( possibly also on satellite ) at the end of August

reply

Jesus!! You weren't the only one in the dark! I've literally only just bought the double DVD of the first two and came online to see what everybody thought of 2, wasn't expecting a 3!!

However, they're showing a Messiah on the upcoming August Bank Holiday, fingers crossed it's this one eh?!

I think this one is no. 4

Yes, 'Messiah 4 - The Harrowing' is showing here in the UK next week (Sun, Mon, Tues). Messiah 3 aired over here last year in August. Hopefully 3 and 4 will be released together on dvd!

"Messiah 3 - The Promise" is scheduled for Region 2 DVD release in the UK on 26th Sept 2005.

Part one of "Messiah 4 - The Harrowing" is scheduled for broadcast on BBC1 from 9.30pm - 10.30pm on Sunday 28th August (THIS Sunday!) - The BBC website listing reads: -

"Locked in a car, abandoned on a massive rubbish dump and left to die in terrible circumstances, 20 year-old student Catherine McArdle's fate foreshadows an epic trail of death"

It continues on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August (9.00pm - 10.00pm) and (presumably) concludes on Tuesday 30th August (9.00pm - 10.00pm)

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but isn't this the first time "Messiah" has gone out over THREE nights?

reply

You're right, the others were about the same running time, but over 2 nights. Don't know why this one's three. Still, can't wait, Ken Stott and Neil Dudgeon are so good, but I've noticed Frances Grey isn't in this one, wonder why?

reply

Just saw the TV ad' - it looks good.
I can't stand watching over 3 nights though - I think I'll just video it and watch the lot on Wednesday!

As for the DVD of Messiah 3 - I'll think I'll skip it - we all know full well the BBC will release it again later with Messiah 4 - I'll just have to wait for that.

And Frances Grey - maybe her eyes are just TOO evil huh?

IMO, it was the weakest one of the series (so far the newest one looks great) and the ending seemed rushed - but Id say watch it anyway, was stil good.

Yeah man. Messiah 3 was the worst (but still better than most TV thrillers).
Just watched 2nd part of Messiah 4. Superb!

reply

Well, after 2 episodes, Messiah 4 seems to be a welcome return to the tone and structure of the original. I think the 3 part structure works in it's favour, as they've managed to keep me hooked for almost 2 hours before revealling the "theme" - now hopefully the third part wont suffer from padding...

As for Messiah 3, I watched it again on Saturday in preparation for number 4, and I agree with the general comments here - it's the weakest of the series - taking Red and his team away from their usual environment and playing a "killer is amongst us" Agatha Christie style narrative just didn't suit. Ken Stott seemed crimially under-used (considering he's supposed to be the main character) and the whole thing was more than usually far-fetched.

Still - I agree - even the weakest Messiah is a cut above most dramas these days. Long may they continue.

Anyone who gets a kick out of this particular Messiah should read Matthew Pearl's 'The Dante Club'. Set in Boston in the 19th Century, four scholars who are translting Dante find that people are being murdered in ritualistic ways as described in Dante's Inferno. This novel was also published in 2003 which means it precedes Messiah IV.

I don't care if the idea was nicked; both are excellent.

messiah 3 wasn't as good as the first two. imo the killer was pretty obvious but the explorations into kates character was superb. messiah 4 was okay but no kate and no susan which made it different. all the DVDs of messiah 1-4 are available on amazon for £24 (inc. P&P first class to UK address) which is a bargain...that's why i bought them lol. let's hope for a fifth!
