OT about the real Diane Arbus

The legendary magazine photographer Diane Arbus died one month after the movie Klute starring Jane Fonda was released in New York where Diane lived. Consider that the photo of Diane that I'm adding below was taken sometime in 1971, according to the biography of her by Patricia Bosworth. If the interval of a month seems tight, consider that Diane could have seen Jane Fonda's shag haircut in magazine publicity several weeks before the movie's release.

Jane appeared on the cover of Life magazine with her shag. Possibly other magazines had her on the cover in May and June of 1971, and Diane could have walked by a newsstand and seen Jane's shag. Maybe Diane told her hairdresser to copy the movie star's shag.

The Bosworth book says Diane Arbus regularly got her hair done at the salon of an expensive Manhattan store called Henri Bendel, then located at 10 West 57th Street. It moved to another location in 1990.

In the photo that you click on below,Diane looks pretty good for age 48, don't you think? She was 48 when the photo of her inside her West Village, Manhattan apartment was taken by Eva Rubinstein, a photographer who later became well-known. So please click below to see " Diane Arbus' " shag, copied from Jane Fonda.

Last night, Turner Classic Movies repeated Klute where Jane Fonda's shag haircut remains the same throughout the entire two-hour film. That got me thinking about the similarity between her hair and Diane's hair in the Rubinstein photo. Other photos of Diane with the shag exist. The coffee table book Diane Arbus: Revelations has them.
