translation

I'm a white guy who is fairly knew to Bollywood movies and was just wondering if my suspicioun was correct; does "dhoom" mean rock as in rock and roll?

reply

It means more like a huge "bang" If you're fairly new to Bollywood, I would suggest these movies instead which I have written below, especially the first 5. Being a non indian myself, I found this movie a major turn off. I mean I loved the songs, but the storyline and action was not up to par. They have a long way to go here when it comes to delivering action scenes. I believe that romance and potraying emotions is what they do best in their movies. I'm a huge fan of their movies. My girlfrined got me hoooked to them. I would try the ones I listed below. Especially the first one.

These movies have awesome storylines and soundtracks!!

1) Dil Chahta Hai
2) Hum Tum
3) Salaam Namaste
4) Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
5) Rang De Basanti
6) Lagaan
7) Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
8) Dil Se

Cheers for the translation.
I don't know why Dhoom seems to cop a nit of flack. I have seen a few Bollywood movies and I really enjoyed this one.

Thanks for the list dude I'll try and check some of them out. I have already seen two (Hum Tum, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham). I'll agree with you on Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, it's tremendous, but Hum Tum didn't blow me away. There were some very funny moments and Rani Mukerjee was great but it was just a romantic comedy with not much to recomend it.
Probably the most disappointing Bollywood film I have seen was Paheli.
Main Hoon Na on the other hand was awesome!

I couldn't stand the action scenes, since they looked so unreal. Dude you have to watch Dil Chahta Hai. It's the best movie ever!!!

reply

I've been watching Bollywood movies since I knew what a movie was, and I'm a huge fan of Bollywood and Hollywood. I actually found Dhoom to be one of the best Bollywood movies that I've ever watched, but unfortunately it's a complete rip off of Ocean's 11. I would like, however, to recommend some more movies in addition to what chrismatt mentioned above.
1. Humraaz
2. Sangharsh
3. Koi Mil Gaya

If you are new to Bollywood, do not watch Salaam Namaste. This is actually the reason why I am posting. Quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen hyped up and I watch movies like a religion. A waste of time and just plain annoying.

I would agree that Bollywood has work to do as far as action is concerned, but for an industry that has just begun to foray into that field, I would have to give Dhoom its props.

I am new to Bollywood also.

The first thing you need to get used to is that the movies are a lot longer than the average Hollywood movies.

The second is that they can suddenly burst into song for no apparent reason, and every movie, regardless of genre, has a few songs in it.

Personally I started watching Bollywood movies when I saw a poster of Piryanka Chopra in a video store and fell in love with her. Stupid, I know but there it is.
