Ha ha ha...touche--how often does anyone get to use THAT line!
This movie was amazing...the technical challenges that show the strains of the limited budget were more than overcome by the performances; they raised this far above the level of similar low-budget fare with higher budgets (mom's breakdown in front of the garage was a beautifully heart-wrenching scene). Thankfully we live in an age where independent voices can be heard despite all the bombast from the latest Hollywood pablum, where a movie with something different to say can surface occasionally; the "third act" of this would never have survived a script meeting with a board of H'wood executives, who would have been sitting around clutching their "Syd Fields" in their ADD-riddled hands, turning it into something safe, predictable and dull. One of the only conceivable missteps was, perhaps, the over-the-top queen character...I can only assume he's based on a guy who is really like that--they are out there--but something got lost in translation, either the acting or direction, making him a one-note joke. Again, the rest of the acting is so strong and the story compelling enough, it's a minor quibble.
I'm not sure how one follows up a story based on one's life and so far it doesn't look like the author of this movie has gotten the opportunity to do so anyway...it's a shame, but at least this got made, and made well...quite an accomplishment, actually.
