Genre?

Hi,

This film was premiered in 15/9/05, here in Greece, distributed by the well known festival of "premiere nights". I was one of the official guests of this premiere, and, before the projection of the film, Mr. Gavras (whom I've also personally met) rose to discuss it. He said, among other things, that this film is not a black comedie, in fact, he said that it was't a comedie at all. How he defined it, is a "conte amorale". He said that it's difficult to translate it in Greek, his native language. Therefore, I ask you, what does this really mean?

"Nothing is written"

A correct translation will be "immoral tale", but in french morale also means the lesson you take out of a story. Maybe Gavras meant that you can't figure how you will act if you were José Garcia's character.

It is a black comedy. Maybe it's a french movie directed by a greek, but the Westlake spirit is what carries all the movie. A noir comedy with black humor, if you want, but the humor ends up being much lighter than it looks.

"immoral tale" sounds much like a parable, except a subverted parable.

This movie is presented to people as black comedy. And the director himself says otherwise so we can say that director could not produce the movie he intended in the beginning.I believe most of the people regard this movie as black comedy, even imdb does.

"conte amorale" means amoral story or plot. What is in this movie director calls amoral? Is it that garcia tries to get this job by doing amoral competition, by killing them?

I do not know what kind of genre director intended to make.To me this is black comedy and I like it.And Jose Garcia is acting great.I burst into laughters several times when he portrays bumbling killer character. It was amazing.

I watched it on television where it was described as a "comedy". I'd agree with the director that it wasn't even a black comedy. Yes, there were some humourous moments; but as Gavras arguably implies, watching the mental disintegration of a human being into some sort of socio - pathic murderer (and yes later, some sort of redemption/resurrection)isn't necessarily all that funny. What I will say is that the acting, particularly from the leads was first class and there some really well placed twists and turns in the narrative. The ending was delicious.
