And so Heck pretends to be asleep

So here we have it. Rachel finally gets up the nerve to tell Heck what has been happening. Heck has been bugged by her behaviour for weeks, but when she starts out to discuss it he decides to avoid the issue instead of dealing with it!

Ok, Rachel's timing could have been better considering Heck was pretty drunk, but as it turns out he was relatively attentive/alert since he was only pretending to be asleep.

I keep wondering what might have happened if he'd decided to have it out with her there and then and clear the air, she might have even told him who the 'other person' was, rather than having to rely on Coop's sleuthing skills.

Anyone else think his inaction at this point might have ended up costing him his marriage, considering Rachel, her feelings for Luce aside, was genuinely prepared to work at giving it another go?

To me it was pretty clear that he didn't know how to react and wanted to give himself time to decide his next step. To see if Rachel continue her odd behavior, or will she treat him like she did before the wedding? He also probably wanted to talk to Cooper and listen to his own feelings before making a decision.

Rachel was always prepared to work to salvage their marriage. At the night of her confession and on the morning of her birthday. Hec was the one that ended it. It seems he thought a lot about it. When he saw Rachel's reaction when H said Luce is going on a very long holiday, he realized that no matter how much Rachel is willing to work on the marriage, her heart will always belong to Luce, and that's not a way for either of them to live.

No, I think what cost his marriage was his being so damn generous. By that point Rachel had decided to stay with him. If he hadn't pretended to be asleep, he probably would've ended it right away anyway.

Pretending to be asleep was one of the best things he could have done.

When you get an emotional bombshell dropped on you like that, you can often lose control of your emotions and say things you'll later regret.

By pretending to be asleep, he gives himself some time to cool down and get his emotions in check, or at least in a little better state.
