Why, exactly, was this made. The first Big Momma's House didn't do very well in the box office and got some pretty bad reviews. So why is it that they'd do a sequel to a movie that people didn't like?

That is a very good question...although I thought the sequel was much better than the original. The first one was okay, but a bit cheesy. I liked this one better without the corny romantic subplot and with better character development.
shareit's not all about money all the time most directors or the actors want to do it for the fun of it, that's when you know they like their job more than money. i'm glad they made a second one! :)

The first one made 100M on a 30M budget. If you throw in 50M in ads you still made about 50M.
They made the second one for 40M, probably spent 50M on ads and make 70M at box which lost them 20M but they probably made it for it in video rentals and PPV sales.
So then they made the third one. 32M budget. probably 10M marketing if that. and made 37M at the box office. Probably did OK in video rentals and PPV sales
Now you probably won't see a forth one.
