The fact that this uses only the re-recorded versions...

...on the soundtrack is a huge distraction.

There, I said it.

Throughout the first half of the film, you've got all these lovely vintage photos of Brian and the boys, and Gold Star studios &c, and meanwhile in the background there's no warm Gold Star sound, but rather, a harsh, clinical digital soundscape.

I don't know my own password.

Yes, the original music has a quality to it that cannot be duplicated, so it may be difficult for casual viewers/listeners to understand what all the fuss was about regarding the SMiLE music.

My suggestion to those who are watching this with casual viewers: have them watch the documentary, skp the concert footage on the second disc and instead listen to Disc 2 of the "Good Vibrations" box set and the the "Unsurpassed Masters" CD set.

So why couldn't they use the piles of old session tapes they had lying around?

reply

Because it was all unfinished... We have 2 Beach Boys in the grave, and Brian's voice is nothing like it was in 1967.
Update: 3/7/12
Well... I LOVE the new box set that came out! For what was supposed to be unfinished music, it sounds pretty completed to me.

Trust me,
