Rashida Jones was all wrong as Edie

I've just started watching Ny-Lon, a show which was slated in the UK when it came out in the early noughties. And it's actually all right. Seeing London the way it was before all the meddling of big Brother and bigger corporations makes me feel homesick for my own city.

But there's one massive flaw: Edie. Every time Rashida is onscreen, it's like the action grinds to a halt. She seems to have exactly one expression at her disposal and she wears it for the entire duration of the series, sticky-out glossed lips pouting and eyes big and bewildered like some sort of victim. You want to grab her by her shoulders and yell, "What you pouting for?! You have a guy whose willing to fly 3000 miles to see you for cryin' out loud!!" Adding to that is the fact that she has no chemistry with Moyer and she doesn't look like an Edie. (What? I'm serious, this kind of stuff makes a difference.)

I am not one of those viewers who hates and slates female stars - far from it - but I really think the mis-casting of Rashida as Edie sank this show, which would otherwise have been a very decent watch. And of course it's not Rashida's fault - she's just an actress making a living, but the casting director ought to have been sacked.

In a nutshell, I am all for having a remake of Ny-Lon if only to see what this show would look like when played by a good ensemble.

I totally agree with you in regard to Rashida Jones (who also doesn't bring much currently to Parks & Recreation) but Stephen Moyer...that man is essential. It's so funny how some faces, doing almost nothing, project depth and complexity while others don't. Still, the show was enjoyable.

Agreed. Plus the one-note emotional scale mad or mad.

I just found this series on Netflix . . . and couldn't stop watching. How would they resolve their love affair?

From the beginning I liked Rashida Jones as Edie because she's exotic, which is what drew him to her in the beginning. I wondered about Edie's background, her career choices, her choices in friends, her beauty. Come on, she's drop dead gorgeous.

Found myself focused on Stephen Moyer because I recognized him from True Blood, and the intensity in his face was lovely to watch.

Happy the story was left unresolved. The arch of time spanned only a few weeks. How do you make such world wind life changes in a few weeks when you're a responsible adult?

Edie was right . . . as an independent woman, how could she just leave her life to become dependent on a man she doesn't really know yet.

And Michael . . . in time the market would crash and his choice to be with Edie and New York might resolve itself. Interesting how world history could have taken care of this entire senario.

Too bad the series didn't come back. Far surpasses some of the stuff on TV today.

Agree about Rashida's one-note performance -- doey-eyed confusion!

I thought the whole cast was good, and I really liked her as Edie. I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly so much without their performances (hers, his, the various friends and family members). I thought it was one of the more charming things I've watched in a while. Her character was annoying (I thought) because she kept pushing him away and then wanting him back. But I thought Rashida Jones was great as Edie.

There was something off about the casting in general. But I do agree, Rashida for me was the weakest link. I am not sure if it was that her character was monotone or just her choice to be minimalist in her performance. Part of it was the writing because the I can't see what Michael saw in the Edie character. Something was clearly missing.
I don't know what other actress could have brought some jest to the role but it was hard for me to buy she was this slacker girl who only wanted to work in a record store...

what Jordie?

I thought rashida did a great job with the awful character she was given.
