Tarantino blatantly copied The Propositon for Django Unchained

The similarities between Captain Stanley's home and Candieland plus the story of revenge for an unjust flogging just really struck me too much to be ignored. Initially it appears the Captain and his Wife (who both survive the final shootout) are the main Antagonists before one slowly realizes by about act III it is simply a story devoid of protagonists.

It's almost certain that Candie was inspired by Queenie & Stanley and Tarantino simply merged them and made the fish-out-of-water woman character a sister instead of wife. The scene where the Aboriginal servant leaves his shoes and runs away in anticipation of Arthur's arrival would have really gotten to QT and it seems the whole Head House Negro Steven vs Django dynamic spun off Authur's blackfella slitting the throat of the police blackfella (It must fascinate QT that Aussies gave blacks rifles when they were employed as farm-hands and trackers). Charlie refers to John Hurt's Anti-Irish character as a Bounty Hunter. The list of similarities is too long for them all to be coincidences.

The Captain has some honourable intentions: a repeated line is "This place is uncivilized, I will civilize it" also it must be understood both movies portray revenge very differently (after seeking revenge in ACT I the Captain counsels his wife against it in ACT III). And yes the flogging happens two thirds in. But when Winstone says "It will be our death sentence" that to me is the line/scene of the film and also the reason why someone like QT would feel robbed in the final shootout - that is when he decides: I am gonna remake this, set it during southern slavery and do it MY WAY! Missing the whole point which is that cycles of violence & vengeance must be broken.

'blatant copying' is one of Tarantino's trademarks.

True

reply

Maybe so, but, Django Unchained, has much better dialogue than this one and is more board with it's characters.

reply

Well maybe but Django refrences around 29 films. The film is almost 3 hours long, there is more then just mr candy and candyland etc.

You are really stretching there pal.

"similarities between Captain Stanley's home and Candieland"

"Charlie refers to John Hurt's Anti-Irish character as a Bounty Hunter"

So what are we saying here? Any movie that features a 19th century estate house or references bounty hunters must've been copied by Tarantino?

I am sorry but these claims are just laughable. There are some very vague, tenuous similarities between The Proposition and Django Unchained, but then much the same might be said of almost any movie. You're going to have to come up with something a lot more concrete than this if you want to substantiate claims of plagiarism.

And failed to make it as good as The Proposition

reply

The characters of DiCaprio and Jackson are actually lifted from a movie named "Drum" is a sort of spiritual sequel to "Mandingo"

And Django Unchained is hardly comparable to The Proposition, the tone is completely different

I must say tho, I'd enjoyed the proposition more

Yes. I like both films but I never once thought of Tarantino's film while watching The Proposition.🐭

reply

I loved both movies as well and also did not think of this while watching DU.

Like Wilson Mizner once said: "If you steal from one author, it's plagiarism; if you steal from many, it's research."

reply

Well, Reservoir Dogs was a complete and unabashed rip off of City on Fire.
