What a shame...

...that this film was never more widely distributed. I stumbled across it one morning while getting ready for work. It had just started on TMC HD and I was hooked instantly - initially because of the location (I am an Anglophile, and do commute back & forth to London for work)and because of Ms. Plowright. She seems to light up the screen in this role. At any rate, I recorded it and watched it later.

I wondered how I missed this film, but I see here that it was never picked up (not even in the UK). What a shame. It's nice to know that gentle films with a simple story to tell and a truth we all must face one day can still be made.

I have to agree with you. I have travelled to London and lived in the UK. I just adore this film. However, I stumbled across it at Blockbuster and instantly fell in lofe.

I was the same way, little ol' country girl waking up on Sunday morning, had to got to the bathroom, and I always fall asleep with the TV on and i couldn't get back to sleep. it caught me as soon as i crawled back into bed. I have never heard of this movie and i now believe it is one of my favorites. I am so glad my BLATTER woke me up , on my first day off in a week, so i can enjoy and relate to this movie.... I am off to call my grandma !!!

I caught it on Starz a couple of weeks ago and then bought the DVD.

This movie is incredible -- intelligent, witty and beautifully acted. It is character driven and beautifully filmed.

Dan -- I wish there were more films like this being made today. Suffice it to say, I have sent several of my friends messages via Netflix to add this to their list.

It also shows what an incredible talent Rupert Friend is -- he will be one of the biggest stars coming out of Blighty very soon!

What a beautiful film! I can't believe I had not heard of it before and found it by accident yesterday on one of the movie channels. Joan Plowright was wonderful (and reminds me so much of my terrific British mother-in-law), and Rupert Friend stole my heart. He was such a brilliant cad in Pride & Prejudice, but incredibly winning and charming in this film.

My husband will enjoy this, so I'm going to purchase the DVD, as this is one I can watch over again. What a great film. I can't believe I never heard of it before.

This movie has become one of my all time favorites. I also stumbled upon it on a pay channel in HD, and have viewed it twice and won't erase it from my dvr. Fine performances and so touching, the musical score is fantastic, this film is perfection...sad to see that Joan Plowright did not get an Academy Award, or even a nomination, it was well-deserved!

I too caught in on STARZ & just loved it.
My mom lived with me, my husband, & our 26 yr. old son.
She just passed away last year after living with us since my dad died.
My, how she loved to play Scrabble!
She was my best female friend, & this movie was a poignant reminder of her.

I completely agree. I stumbled upon this wonderful film completely by accident on one of my movie channels. I can't believe how unbelievably gorgeous it is. I definately want to see it again.

I passed this by a number of times on tv until today. Should've realized that anything Dame Plowright is in would automatically be great. Such a wonderfully sensitive film! Adored it.

It seems to be playing on cable quite a bit, so maybe its developing a growing, and appreciative American audience. In the DVD, there is a special feature showing Joan Plowright getting an AARP award for outstanding performance in a 'Movie for Grown Ups' -- It was really very sweet to see.

Karen, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Anything done by the great Joan Plowright promises to be marvelous and this was no exception. But unlike you and many others here as a longtime devotee of hers I was able to discover this relatively early on one of my numerous periodic searches on Amazon.

Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.
