Not the director’s film

My friend worked on this production, and apparently the producers completely recut the film to make it more ‘commercial’. I haven’t seen the director’s cut but apparently it’s much better than the version being released. I heard that the director walked away from the film during post and asked to have his name removed, but the producers refused. I hate it when directors get screwed.

That sucks. I was looking forward to this film.

This is a real shame. I remember seeing Bookcruncher at a festival and thinking it was one of the best short films I'd seen. Studios should leave directors alone to make their movies.

I agree, but this wasn't even made by a studio. It was supposed to be an 'independent' film.

I remember reading something about this. Apparently Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) was originally on board as the composer, and he walked off the film with the director. I was intrigued because I’m a huge Four Tet fan and I think he would have done an awesome film score.

Something wasn't right in the structure of this film. It's a shame if this is true.

It is true, the director is the brother of one of my best friends, and she told me that Trudi Styler was largely responsible for the fall-out, having put a lot of pressure on Dan. I've met him a few times, and have heard a lot through his sister, and my impression is that he would definitely try to do something unusual and bold, though I wouldn't say this film is.

Having said all this, I did enjoy the film (albeit seen in miniature on an aeroplane - I was asked not to pay to see it if possible) in its distributed form. Jennifer Ehle was fantastic as usual and I enjoyed the tension in the relationships. Of course it would be fascinating to see the director's cut!

David Bergstein is the producer who re cut the film. He is the worst person in the film business. I know the makers of CHAOS dealt with his madness as well. It's a shame. He's a moron with an ego. The worst kind of *beep*

Commercial is the last adjective I would give to this movie.
If it was cut to be more commercial, it must have been terrible.
However having heard that I'd be curious as to what the original
looked like. I quite liked this movie .. not really sure why.
It just seemed to smoothly build to something ... showing the
arc of someone's life over that amount of time and how it can
change or reveal itself to the person it pretty good.

I just saw it through the streaming video option on the LOVEFILM site. I don't know which version I saw but I really, really liked it.

That being said, it's pretty darn far from being "commercial." It's a slow, quiet film (though wonderfully shot and with brilliant performances.) If this was the producer's cut, what was the original one like? Dubbed entirely in Turkish? Seven hours long, with a forty-five minute scene composed entirely of Danny Huston building the treehouse in real time?
