They should rename this show 'Kevin has a problem with your house'

Has he ever been optimistic about something ???

Sorry for the horrible english. I'm Swedish.

Well, that's one of his best traits. He can be very critical without being condecending, and without people taking umbrage. He doesn't sugarcoat it, and he's very charming about it at the same time. I'd say that's the main reason for the series being so successful, that he can navigate between the obstacles without people getting mad or angry at him.

I could not agree with you more. I wouldn't enjoy this show as much if it had a different host.

The fact is most people have no taste in home design, either interior or exterior, they rarely have the skills to actually project manage a construction project, and they sometimes have much more money than they have earned or deserve.

Kevin dances around all these issues quite politely yet directly, as mature adults do.

It's much better to be truthful than cloyingly optimistic.

They should rename this show "I'm an arrogant selfish twat who doesn't care about my neighbors." Half of the houses in the later seasons are modernist white cubes stuck in the middle of historic Victorian neighborhoods.

If all of the neighbors show up at the planning meetings and fight you tooth and nail, take the hint.

The owners of the Thames boat house were some of the worst. "We can't all live in the stone age." and "I'd love to tear the neighbors' houses down next."

Even Kevin has to dance around it in his narration of several episodes, downplaying the style and focusing on the craftsmanship.

Like all tv it is edited down to the basics and juicy bits.

They film hours and hours of footage.

If there is a dispute with a neigbour, which in reality is one discussion over tea and biscuits they edit it down to increase the drama. And the narration picks up on it.
It's all clever cutting.

I'd also say they do the complete opposite. They downplay some bits to lower the tension and drama. As said, what makes Kevin so good is that he takes it down to an individual level. He's quite harsh, if he feels they can take it. But he doesn't go into it to hurt people. I'm sure there was a lot of tensions with the neighbours they simply didn't show.

As said, he dances around all the issues in a way seldom seen on television. He's simply a natural juggling those issues without people feeling hurt, "as mature adults do". And that's what makes it so good.
