i haven't seen the movie before but i read up on it. Max turns into Michelle when he mastrubates and when Michelle masturbates or has sex someone she turns back into Max. [max is HOTT!!]

I suppose the closest in humans would be hermaphrodites. They are born with both both sets of sex organs. I think there's a DNA/chromosome issue with them, too, but when I did a brief check I didn't see a notation. However, in humans there's no morphing back and forth between genders or looking like a female and then looking like a male as they toy with in the film.
There is a famous model from the 70s and/or 80s who is a hermaphrodite. I can't remember her name -- Tulah or something like that.

With other animals, there are hemaphrodites who can switch gender; with some, they can go back and forth any number of times. That's why they show the frogs during the opening credits of the film. If there aren't enough male frogs some of the females will turn into males in some species of frog.

I was also trying to figure that out. Luke obviously seen Max around before because of the way they interacted in the garage. However, Michelle talks about a relationship had with a boy named Hawkins from New York. From what I can infer, Max was originally born as Max because he does mention traveling when taking to "Luca."
All I know is that if zerophiliacs actually existed it would be really strange.

Oh, and didn't people in the town think it was weird that Max's room was decorated like a girl's room, just curious.

p.s. Max is hot and you can check him out every Sunday on Lifetime's tv drama Blood Ties.

Luke seemed to know Michelle too. He talked about "stalking" her when he was talking to her the first time at the garage. They seem to be in college so he'd probably seen her around campus or around the town. Seeing as Michelle/Max wasn't locked before they had sex with Luke/Luca, it's really not possible to tell which gender they were born as. My theory is that they were born as Michelle, only because we get more of her history and the "main couple" seems to be Luke and Michelle. But seeing as Luke/Luca and Michelle/Max are both gender-fluid and can change with each other, it doesn't really matter.

Just a side note, Tula Is actually a post operative Transsexual. True Hermaphrodites are actually very very rare in human beings

reply

Thanks!

I looked for more info (now that I had the spelling of her name lol), and according to Wikipedia she is a transsexual, but she also has Klinefelter's Syndrome and has XXXY chromosomes instead of the usual XY for a male.

reply

you sure, I'm pretty sure the stats are 1/1000 people born intersexed, wheras 1/35000 are transsexual (at least people who come to terms with it, I'm sure many try to live as the same gender as their birth sex)

reply

Hmm....I guess...but what I got was that either she wanted to be a girl for a while...orrr she was a girl initially and turned into Max when she came...or was just massively comfortable with both.

Not only are they very, very rare among humans, but in most cases, the parents will opt to have the infant surgically altered to remove the organs of one gender and leave the other — so that their baby will "fit in."

reply

I know I'm responding to something written two years ago, but it's important.

The term "hermaphrodite" is incorrect (when used to refer to humans with both sets of sex organs). Hermaphroditism occurs mostly in invertebrates. In humans the correct term is intersexed.

"Hermaphrodite" is the classical term for the condition, taken from the name of the Greek God Hermaphroditous who was the son of Hermes and Aphrodite and recieved his name from each. In his life story he was a very handsome youth who happened upon a nymphs pool and while he was bathing the nymph jumped into the pool, wrapped herself around him and cried out to the Gods that they may never be parted, so they were combined into a single male/female being. "intersexed" is a newer and more p/c term used to describe individuals with this condition.

Well I have watch the movie like 5 times and I think it was Michelle because she had a boyfriend and the relationship didn't work. I think when the boyfriend found that she was a zerophiliac he get scared and runaway. She uses Max for her job becuase in that way the men trust him more that her. I know that some frogs can change of sex but i don't think this happend with humans.

I'M SMARTBUT IN A STUPID WAY

reply

I think that's right. It makes the most sense especially because neither one of them are ACTUALLY gay if they were both born guys, that would be kinda weird! Either way, this is the weirdest movie I have ever seen! Great, but weird!

reply

i just watched this movie it was kinda weird m but wouldn't both max/michelle and Luke /luka be bi sexual? its kinda touched on it that all people are a bi to a degree in the the monage scene where max & luka started to make love it shows them in different pairings max & luka, michelle & Luke, Luke & Max visa versa, i quess they can choose who they want to be... wow switching sex rolls woud kinda be cool if you think about it!

reply

I think the final scenes were trying to say that they were attracted to the person not the gender thats why you saw combinations of luka/max michelle/luke max/luke and michelle/luca during the loft montage.

And Luke/luc was not attracted to men in general illustrated when Luke didn't feel anything with Max. He loved michelle, all the incarnations of her.

reply

mm, no, I think whoever said they switch when they masturbate was wrong. It seemed to me that there are several stages to zerophilia.

1) You're born however you're born.

2) You lose your virginity, and start to switch whenever you're aroused.

3) You have an orgasm as each sex, to sort of solidify things.

4) You can change at will.

5) You have sex with a Z in order to lock in your gender, until you have sex with a Z again.

It seems to me that Max wouldn't have had time to go in the back and... well, you know, in order to come around to the front and be Michelle the first time we meet her, unless he was able to just switch. Like s/he does in the shower scene (which has to be the hottest scene in any film I've ever seen)... it didn't seem like Michelle was pleasuring herself in the shower, she just... switched.

reply

hmm, i dont know. didn't that doctor (sydney) say that you had to have an orgasm to change? and max was gone for a while when luke was messing around with all that stuff in the garage. and in the shower scene, michelle was definitely pleasuring herself.. i thought that was pretty obvious. graphic almost!

reply

Max defintely had time to do the deed to change after he left Luke in the garage. You notice that Michelle is carrying the same red rag that Max did when she first appears and meets Luke.

reply

I think that there was always a Max. The age of Max and his experience as a mechanic speak to the fact that he was there first. Luke has lived in the town his whole life the fact that he becomes Michelle's "stalker" only in college speaks to her being new. It seems that Max was at least bisexual before he changed he decided that Luke was interesting and went to change to michelle. Luke starts to freak out with Max not only because he discovers that Luca is attracted to Mac but that he as a male is to.

reply

I think you are right.. I just saw the movie and I love it so much I watch it everynight...You have really god points about who was first and I was wondering that myself but when you explained,it made sense..We saw Max first and then he went to the back and then michelle comes..It made my jaw dropped when I saw that scene when michelle turns into Max which is so sexy..

reply

i just assumed that michelle was born michelle. it made more sense to me, considering she spoke of having a relationship with a guy.

but another point, when max initially becomes michelle, we see a little smile on his face as he looks back at luke before he disappears to do his business. so if you want to take that little scene to heart, you could assume that max came first, and that he is bisexual, but michelle is probably straight.

reply

I'm going to put in my thesis. After reading this post.

It is my conclusion that Max was indeed born Michelle. Case in point, the bedroom being decorated to be a girl's room in the first place. It is my belief that Michelle loved working with cars, but felt, or perhaps, was constantly told that cars was a guy's lifestyle. When she became Max, after the initial freakouts ended, she embraced Max, and took on the job. But then as Max, moved down from New York, and kept as Max for some time, while probably keeping Michelle to a more personal life. Also, Being Max allowed her to get to know Luke, and perhaps one day, decided it was time to see how he reacted to Michelle.

reply

I think you are missing the point. Michelle/Max is fully comfortable with both his/her feminine and masculine sides, and enjoys the ability to switch (case in point is when Max first meets Luke, he turns into Michelle, presumably because she is attracted to him). By contrast, Luke/Luca is in denial that some part of him wants to be female. His method of suppressing his female side (having sex with Sydney), which he hopes will make him a "normal" man, is viewed by Michelle as a betrayal. There is a universal message of self-acceptance here that goes beyond a fictional movie or condition.

reply

Totally agree!

reply

"There's no supposed to be anything; you just are!"

This to me is probably the most telling part of the movie that explains Max/Michelle's ideas of what sex he/she is. I don't think it's about being male or female. He just is.

reply

I thought Max was Michelle. I mean, he was obviously attracted to Luke in his male form, so he had to be a woman to get Luke attracted to him, and I mean that he was a bisexual guy; they both were, in my opinion. Or maybe it's just that they accepted each other for whoever they are.

"Why would anyone steal a doorknob?"
"There are some nice doorknobs."

reply

Who cares? There's no concrete interpretation that would guarantee what physical sex Max/Michelle was assigned at birth. Frankly, it's not even relevant.

Thank you for that scintillating addition to the discussion. I bet you also bless those around you with little gems of knowledge like this one.
